Definisi Harga Diri menurut Santrock, salah satu tokoh dalam Psikologi Sosial pada tahun 2003 :
"Harga diri adalah dimensi evaluatif yang menyeluruh dari diri.
Contohnya ada seorang remaja dapat mengerti bahwa ia tidak hanya seseorang, tetapi juga memiliki pandangan bahwa ia orang yang baik.
Harga diri menyangkut tiga aspek
1. Kelas sosial
2. Agama
3. Riwayat pekerjaan orang tua."
Sementara itu, menurut Clemens dan Bean,
"Harga diri merupakan penilaian-penilaian seseorang tentang dirinya sendiri, bagaimana seseorang menganggap dirinya apakah ia termasuk individu yang berharga atau sebaliknya.
Singkatnya, harga diri adalah pandangan keseluruhan dari individu tentang dirinya sendiri.
Harga diri mempunyai karakteristik pengasuhan, yaitu :
1. Self esteem dari stabilitas ibu
2. Peran pengasuhan dari ayah
3. Perilaku peran pengasuhan
4. Interaksi ayah dan ibu
Keempat hal ini sangat mempengaruhi harga diri yang kita bentuk.
Harga diri juga memiliki karakteristik subjek yang meliputi :
1. Atribut fisik
2. Kemampuan umum
3. Masalah dan penyakit
4. Aspirasi
