Nasrettin Hoca günümüzde kendi adıyla anılan Sivrihisar'ın Hortu Köyü'nde 1208 yılında doğdu. 1284 yılında Akşehir'de vefat etti. Mevcut bilgilere göre babası Hortu Köyü imamı Abdullah Efendi , annesi ise yine aynı köyün insanlarından olan Sıdıka Hatun'dur. Yaşadığı çağda Sivrihisar bölgesi Anadolu Selçukluları ile Bizans arasında sınır oluşturmaktadır. Bilindiği kadarıyla Nasrettin Hoca Selçuklu Hükümdarlarından Alaeddin Keykubat I. Gıyasettin , II. Keyhüsrev , IV. Kılıç Arslan ve III.Gıyasettin Keyhüsrev dönemlerine tanıklık etmiştir.
İlk eğitimini babası Abdullah Efendi'den almıştır.Babasının ölümü üzerine Nasrettin Hoca'nın onun yerine imam olduğu söylenir.
Nasrettin Hoca'nın Akşehir'e göçü öncesinde medresede ders okuttuğu ve Sivrihisar'da kadılık görevinde bulunduğu rivayet edilmektedir.
Nasrettin Hoca Sivrihisar ve Akşehir'de imamlık , hatiplik , vaizlik , müezzinlik , müderrislik ve kadılık gibi işlerle ilgilenmiştir. Geçimini sağlamak amacıyla çiftçilik , bahçıvanlık ve pazarcılık yaptığı söylenir . Hoca , 1284 yılında 76 yaşında Akşehir'de Hayata Gözlerini Yumdu .
