In Ancient Greece, the Olympics were originally started to honor the Greek god, Zeus. Zeus was the father to all the Greek gods and goddesses. The first Olympic game was believed to be in 776 b.c., and that was around 3,000 years ago. Also, the Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece. The very first event that ever took place in the Olympics was the sprint. It was about 108 meters in length. After 13 Olympics, in other words, after about 52 years, other events were added. The Olympics continued for nearly 12 centuries before Emperor Theodosius banned them around 393 a.d. The winner of the games would claim his award directly after the competition. A Hellanodikis, which is a Greek judge, would place a palm branch in his hands and fans would throw flowers towards him. Red ribbons were tied around his head and hands as a sign of victory. Nowadays, we assume the Olympics are for sport-loving fans, and mainly for entertainment. For these reasons above, we see why there is a more valuable reason for the Olympics.
