Jadi, paranoia adalah proses pikiran yang terganggu. Cirinya berupa kecemasan/ketakutan yang berlebihan, sering sampai tidak rasional dan timbul delusi. Pemikiran paranoid biasanya disertai anggapan akan dianiaya oleh sesuatu yang mengancamnya.

Tanda-tanda orang yang paranoid:
- kecurigaan berulang yang tanpa dasar
- sulit mempercayai orang lain
- tidak dapat bersikap loyal
- sulit kerjasama
- tidak mau berbagi informasi dengan orang lain (karena ketakutan yang tidak beralasan)
- mengartikan kata-kata/teguran yang ramah sebagai ancaman/merendahkan dirinya
- pendendam terhadap masalah sekecil apapun
- sulit memaafkan orang lain yang pernah menggangu, melukai, menyakiti ataupun mengabaikan dirinya
