Appia gibi Wagner’ in izinden giderek sahne üzerinde ışığın ve müziğin yarattığı ritme önem verdi. Çağdaş tiyatro estetiğinin kuramcılarından olan Craig Appia gibi, role ruhbilimsel yaklaşımla gerçekçi dekor anlayışına karşı gelmiş, yönetmeni ise geleceğin tiyatrosunun asal oyuncusu olarak görmüştür. Oyunun sahnelenmesinden yalnızca yönetmen sorumludur. Yönetmene pek çok yetki ve sorumluluk veren Craig’ e göre anlamı en güzel en uyumlu dile getirme yolunda yönetmen yalnızca oyuncuları, dekoru, kostümü buyruğu altına almakla kalmamalı, yazarın da yerini almalıdır. Bu durum ilerleyen yıllarda daha da yumuşamış, oyunun yorumuyla ilgili sonsöz yine yönetmen de kalmak üzere öteki yaratıcılarla daha çok ortaklık kurarak günümüze kadar uzamıştır.
Gordon Craig oyunlarında simgeler kullanmaya önem vermiştir. Tiyatroda stilizasyonun önünü açan kişi olarak bilinir.
