Wuthering Heights CH. 10-11 Outline

**Chapter 10**
Lockwood is sick
-Nelly wants Kenneth to take a look at LW but he won't be available for a while
-refuses medicine from Nelly Dean
-drop the powders
-Mr. LW asks Nelly how HC
1. he finished his education and came back a gentleman
2. how he got financial aid in college
3. why he was absent from 1780-1783
4. if he traveled
-Nelly discusses how she doesn't know how HC got his riches or became smart and continues where she left off from the story

Mr. HC returns after a 3 year absence a changed man
-calls Nelly from the kitchen
- Nelly can't figure out whose voice is calling her name
- she's excited to see HC
-HC wants to see Mrs. Linton and asks Nelly to get Mrs. Linton for him
-HC --> Mrs. Dean, don't say that it is him (a person from Gimmerton wishes to see [Mrs. Linton])
-Mrs. Linton comes to see who it is, happily surprised
-But Mr. Linton isn't happy that HC came back
-Mrs. Linton wanted to talk in the parlour but Mr. Linton wanted to talk in the kitchen
-HC had grown up a tall, athletic, well-formed man
-explains he left because Catherine was getting married
- returns to get even with Hindley

Hindley allows HC to stay at his home

Catherine does not want Isabella to be with HC

Isabella is crying

-HC shows up and Catherine wants to humiliate Isabella in front of him

**Chapter 11**
Nelly goes to WH to talk to Hindley
-bumps into Hareton
-Hareton began throwing stones and cussing
-Nelly takes out an orange to bribe Hareton to answer her questions
-she asks where he learned to swear
-HC taught him at Hindley
-she gives him the orange and also asks Hareton to tell his father that a woman named Nelly Dean is waiting to speak with him at the garden gate
-He went up and entered the house and HC appeared
-expects to talk to Hindley but HC answers the door
-when HC opens the door, Nelly takes off running down the road

The following day . . .
-Nelly sees HC hug Isabella
-Catherine becomes jealous and wants HC to admit whatever feelings he has for Isabella
-Catherine offers to convince Edgar into allowing the marriage but only if HC truly loves her
-HC is appalled at the idea and vows revenge for the wrong Catherine has done by marrying Edgar
-Nelly informs Edgar of the current altercation in the kitchen
-Edgar orders HC to leave, HC refuses, Edgar calls for assistance
-before they remove HC, Catherine locks herself, Edgar and HC in the kitchen then throws the key into the fire
-Edgar is fearful and hides his face from HC but, Catherine's constant taunting pushes him to strike HC in the throat
-Edgar runs away through the garden in fear
-HC decides he cannot take on 3 men at once and leaves
-Edgar gives Catherine an ultimatum, HC or Edgar
-Catherine locks herself in her room, does not eat for 2 days
-Edgar warns that if she chooses HC she will be disowned (Linton)
