Thunderbird digambarkan memiliki kepala yang 'mirip dengan elang' atau di dunia sihir— dunia kalian, 'mirip dengan Hippogriff'. Mereka memiliki sayap yang berlipat ganda dan kuat, totalnya ada 6 sayap. Bulu Thunderbird berkilau dengan pola seperti awan.
Thunderbird diketahui berubah warna saat memanggil badai, bulu-bulunya yang berwarna-warni berubah dari berbagai warna... emas ke biru elektrik lalu menjadi abu-abu dan perak lalu ke putih dan bahkan sampai warna biru laut gelap. Thunderbird dapat menciptakan badai saat terbang dan sangat sensitif terhadap bahaya.
Thunderbird merupakan kerabat dekat Phoenix dan Salah satu asrama di Ilvermorny School dinamai sesuai dengan makhluk ini.
