Xylomancy berasal dari kata Yunani xylo yang berarti kayu dan manteia yang berarti ramalan. Merupakan suatu bentuk ramalan yang menafsirkan bentuk batang atau ranting pohon baik ketika batang atau ranting tersebut dipungut atau ketika dalam kondisi terbakar.
Bentuk, warna, ketebalan, ukuran, dan lokasi ditemukannya ranting tersebut juga salah satu karakteristik bagaimana ranting digunakan sebagai media ramal.
Metode xylomancy sudah ada di masa lampau pertamakali digunakan di Slovania. Pertanda atau cara membaca ramalan bisa diartikan dari posisi dimana ditemukannya ranting tersebut dan ukuran dari ranting tersebut.
Tukang ramal dahulu mengartikan ketika tiba-tiba ada ranting terjatuh menandakan akan terjadi sebuah kejutan dalam waktu dekat. Mulanya mereka mengartikan jika jatuhnya ranting secara alami menandakan akan terjadinya suatu hal yang mengejutkan, kemudian hal tersebut berganti ketika beberapa ranting dikumpulkan kemudian dilemparkan bersamaan ke tanah dan membentuk sebuah pola maka dari situlah mereka menafsirkan sebuah ramalan dari ranting.
