Bahasa Arab atau biasa ditulis dengan اللغة العربية, yang dibaca al-lughah al-‘Arabīyyah, atau secara ringkas عربي ‘Arabī. Adalah salah satu bahasa Semit Tengah, yang termasuk dalam rumpun bahasa Semit dan berkerabat dengan bahasa Ibrani dan bahasa-bahasa Neo Arami.Bahasa Arab memiliki lebih banyak penutur daripada bahasa-bahasa lainnya dalam rumpun bahasa Semit. Ia dituturkan oleh lebih dari 280 juta orang sebagai bahasa pertama, yang mana sebagian besar tinggal di Timur Tengah dan Afrika Utara.
Perlu diingat, huruf-huruf dalam bahasa Arab tidak selamanya terbaca sesuai aslinya. Di situ peran tanda baca bahsa Arab atau yang biasa disebut harakat.
Sebagai contoh, huruf alif. Kenapa kebanyakan orang membacanya dengan romanisasi 'a'
Karena, di sana ada peran salah satu tanda baca yaitu kasrah (ٓ ). Kasrah ini, memiliki romasisasi 'a' sehingga huruf semula alif bisa berubah menjadi 'a'.

Secara garis besar, harakat hanya ada delapan. Yaitu tasydid ( ّ ), sukun ( ْ ) kasrah (a َ ), fathah (i ِ ) dan dhammah (u ُ ).
Kemudian ketiga harakat terakhir tadi, dikembangkan lagi ke dalam bentuk tanwin, yaitu an ( ً ), in ( ٍٍٍٍٍٍِِ ), dan un ( ٌ ).
Penjasan tiga harakat terlebih dahulu. Yaitu fathah, dhammah, dan kasrah.
ang pertama, fathah. Tanda baca fathah sering disebut baris atas. Artinya letak barisnya di atas huruf hijaiyyah.
Misalnya, ketika tanda baca fathah di letakkan di atas huruf alif, maka dibaca A. Lalu ketika tanda baca fathah diletakkan di atas huruf ba, maka dibaca BA.
Kedua kasrah. Tanda baca kasrah sering disebut baris bawah. Artinya letak barisnya di bawah huruf hijaiyyah.
Misalnya, ketika tanda baca kasrah di letakkan di bawah huruf alif, maka dibaca ^i' ketika tanda baca kasrah diletakkan di bawah huruf ba, maka dibaca bi.
Ketiga dhammah. Tanda baca dhammah sering disebut baris depan. Artinya letak barisnya di depan huruf hijaiyyah.
