Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is the transmission of television content via Internet Protocol (IP) networks. It is different from satellite and terrestrial television delivery. Instead of downloading the media IPTV offers the ability to stream the source media constantly. The client media player is capable of streaming the source content, such as TV channels, almost instantly. It is also known as streaming media.

Though IPTV uses the Internet protocol it is not only restricted to broadcasting television via the Internet (Internet TV). IPTV can be found in many subscriber-based telecommunications networks with high-speed channel services for consumers via set-top boxes and various other gadgets. IPTV can also be utilized to deliver media around corporate and private networks. The ongoing standardization process of IPTV within the telecoms industry (e.g. European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is one of the highlights.

IPTV services may be classified as live television or live media. They can be classified with or without interactivity. the shifting of time for media, e.g., catch-up TV (replays an episode of a television show that has been broadcast just hours or days in the past) and start-over television (replays the current TV show from its beginning); and video on demand (VOD) which involves browsing and viewing items of an online catalogue of media.

Historically, many different definitions of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. The International Telecommunication Union's Focus panel IPTV on IPTV adopted this definition as official:

IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]

Another definition of IPTV in relation to the telecom industry is that of the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) IPTV Exploratory Group in 2005:

IPTV can be defined as the safe and secure distribution to viewers of content and services related to entertainment. It could be Live TV, Video On Demand, and Interactive TV (iTV). The services are available on an internet-agnostic packet switching network, using the IP protocol to transmit audio, video, as well as control signals. While video is not available on the internet, IPTV is a public Internet, with IPTV deployments, security of the network and performance are fully secured.
