What is Watsu?

Massage therapy is the manipulation of soft tissues for the purpose of alleviating pain or restoring health. This type of treatment is sometimes referred to as "Mesotherapy" and is founded on the same principles of chiropractic medicine. The practitioner stimulates specific points in the palm to relax the finger by slow, deep breathing. This is called Tsukubai. Practitioners can also do tapping or kokyu-nage which is designed to increase circulation and eliminate blood clots that have accumulated.

This type of massage is designed to restore mobility to the joints of the spine and strengthen the soft tissues surrounding it. To ease stiffness and encourage healing, light pressure must be applied in the direction of the joint range of motion. To achieve maximum effect, the massage therapist must not only apply direct pressure but also stretch muscles in the direction of joints as well as cartilage change. Examples of the stretches utilized in this technique include lordosis, or lifting of one leg in the air, and pelvic tilts, also known as kegels. Prevention of injury is possible through correctly stretching the muscles and soft tissue.

This type of massage is also referred to as "hot and cold" because it involves both types of stretching.
