What Is an Activist?
The word activist came into existence during the Civil Rights Movement in 1960. It describes those who support the civil rights of people who are experiencing an injustice. According to Merriam Webster the word "activist" can mean helping to make things happen, appealing to others for help, challenging others for a right, making use of force or employing some other form of creative civil disobedience. More specifically the term "activist" can be used to describe any one who attempts to use force against an existing law or injustice.

In the context of political activism the word "activist" can mean anyone who supports, opposes or promotes specific political movements. Activists can take many forms. Some are organizers, some are bloggers, some are sales persons, but most are members of various social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. Social media have made the task of "activist" much easier for many people because they are able to learn about and take part in all sorts of political issues that their fellow citizens are concerned about. In fact it has become common for people to get on to these sites and begin talking about social issues even before there is an opportunity for the government to get involved.

The Internet has also given voice to a new breed of activists that do not necessarily fall within the realm of social media or politics. These are people who take their message to the streets and to the communities. These "Activists" tend to be either physically active or digitally active. One of the most important characteristics of an "activist" as they pertain to social media is their ability to speak out and take action even when doing so may not be in the best interest of those they are speaking out for.

For example the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement is an example of an activist group speaking out on issues that affect African Americans in particular. This group seeks to eliminate police brutality, stop the death penalty and address other issues that affect the lives and liberties of African Americans. The views of this group are held in common with other activists around the world. All want justice and fairness for all people, but some have a more focused view of what they seek to achieve. agency would argue that the Black Lives Matter group is a fringe group of the overall activist community and is separate from the vast majority of activists around the world.

An alternative view of what an activist is might be described as a social change agent that makes a change for the greater good. Activists are people who are dedicated to making social change for a greater good and are willing to put their life on the line. To be more specific, social change does not often involve physical actions. A person who is engaged in social change might refer to themselves as an organizer, or as a volunteer, or as an activist, or even as a writer, filmmaker, public speaker, etc.

Another school of thought about what an activist is considering them as people who get things done through the written word. Activists can be writers, journalists, bloggers, speakers, professors, politicians, or organizers. In many ways, they are like any other person trying to make a difference in the world. One of the most important qualities of what is a word activist is that an individual is willing to go beyond their own comfort zone to bring about change.

What is an activist is a rather self-defined concept that involves many different elements of the activist movement. The larger umbrella term "activist" encompasses many people and issues that have come to the forefront in terms of social change. Issues that range from racial and economic equality to religious tolerance are all included under the larger umbrella labeled "activist." Activists are constantly coming up with creative new ways to bring awareness to pressing issues and end practices that are no longer needed or that are detrimental to social change.

A notable part of what is an activist is the ability for them to use all of these skills in the name of social change. Activism is not only done for social change but also for a personal reason. Many younger people who are politically active are doing so because it makes them feel good. They are using their writing skills and their activism to make themselves feel better about themselves and to better the world around them. Many other individuals to use their participation in political activism to make themselves financially better off. In many ways, what is an activist is a young person that is looking for a way to make a change in the world that will help them achieve financial success and personal freedom.
