Intragastric Balloons
An intragastric balloon, or gastric balloon, is a type of surgical procedure that can be used to help patients lose weight. It is typically used in patients who are too overweight to lose weight through diet and exercise. It is not an option for people who do not wish to have surgery. It is an alternative for patients who have tried unsuccessfully to lose weight with diet and exercise but have not had any success.
Elipse

The Ellipse intragastric balloon is a new type of weight loss device that does not require surgery or anesthesia. The device is placed inside the gastric cavity and generates a constant feeling of satiety, thus reducing a person's appetite. Patients are prescribed a personalized nutritional plan and should practice healthy lifestyle habits.

The Elipse balloon is effective for both overweight and obese patients. The treatment is also an effective preventive measure for weight-related pathologies. The device remains in the stomach for four months, after which it is naturally excreted. Its safety is well documented and patients report a high level of patient satisfaction.

One case report describes a 41-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain, vomiting, and constipation. Prior to the procedure, the patient underwent breast enhancement and abdominoplasty. She was then treated in the Dominican Republic with bariatric surgery that involved the use of an Allurion Elipse intragastric balloon. At her postoperative follow-up visit, the patient reported nausea, abdominal discomfort, and vomiting. She also reported nonbilious emesis and scanty blood secretions in her vomitus.
Orbera

The Orbera intragastric balloon (ORBERA) is a durable silicone balloon that is inserted into a patient's stomach to reduce stomach size. This device helps the patient eat smaller meals and feel full longer. The procedure is performed as an outpatient surgery. It takes about 20 minutes to complete. The balloon is inflated with saline fluid.

The FDA has received reports of five deaths outside of the United States related to the Orbera device. Five of these deaths were related to the device's use, including four involving gastric perforation. One of these deaths was associated with the balloon placement, and the patient was not a U.S. citizen.

The Orbera intragastric balloon stays in the stomach for up to six months, after which it can be removed at the discretion of the physician. The treatment is suitable for adult patients with a BMI of 30 to 40. Because it does not directly cause weight loss , it increases the feeling of satiety. Patients can expect to lose weight rapidly, mainly during the first three months after the procedure. The amount of weight loss may vary depending on the patient's diet and physical activity.
Elipse(tm)

Elipse(tm) is an intragastric balloon designed to reduce gastric volume. The concept of the device is that the balloon's wall floats through the GI tract. Its removal is easy and results in minimal risk to the patient. In the Elipse(tm) study, the balloon was successfully removed in 93 percent of patients without complications. Despite the positive results, the device still has several limitations.

The Elipse balloon is removable without the need for anesthesia or surgery. The balloon can be removed by a doctor after about four months using a time-activated release valve, which drains the balloon once it has been inserted. This feature reduces the need for an endoscopy and minimizes the downtime and costs. However, Elipse(tm) is not FDA-approved for use in the United States. The company is undergoing clinical trials before it can be commercialized in the U.S.

The Elipse Balloon is the only gastric balloon available without endoscopic surgery. It is placed in the stomach via a tube during a 20-minute consultation. The device is filled with saline, and the procedure requires no anesthesia. A quick x-ray is performed to ensure the balloon is positioned properly in the stomach.
Gastric balloon

An Intragastric gastric balloon is a device that helps control food intake by filling up a portion of the stomach. The balloon limits how much food a person can eat in one sitting and stimulates the stomach and duodenum, which triggers the feeling of satiety.

This device is a safe alternative to surgical procedures. It takes approximately 10 minutes to insert and deflate and has a low risk of causing complications. There is a small risk of infection or bleeding due to bacterial growth, and the balloon can cause an obstruction if it is not inserted correctly. The procedure is not painful and does not require incisions. Patients receive counseling for several months after surgery.

The Intragastric gastric balloon is a silicone elastomer device implanted into the stomach. The device is filled with a special fluid, and is then allowed to float in the stomach. The procedure is non-invasive and requires only a day or two in the hospital.
