Just a couple months after making its grand debut at this year's E3, Minecraft has finally appeared on the Android Market, much to the delight of cube enthusiasts and all those who love to waste time. With this new, Pocket Edition app, Mojang hopes to faithfully recreate the Minecraft experience on mobile platforms with a particular focus placed on the game's creative aspect. Version Alpha 0.1 will let players explore worlds that are randomly generated and invite friends to join in their worlds and save multi-player worlds to their phones. They can also manipulate 36 different kinds of blocks from the convenience of their touchscreens. 6MINECRAFTMODS The game is currently only available for Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. Mojang plans to launch it "in the near future" for other Android phones. It's available today for $6.99, or swerve beyond the break for more information, in the full press announcement.
Say hello to Minecraft - Pocket Edition
Today, we launch Minecraft Pocket Edition. The game will be accessible only to Xperia Play, but it will soon be available to other Android devices.
Alpha 0.1 will be the first version and will focus on the artistic aspect of Minecraft. We've tried to bring in features that make sense for playing on a mobile device but still preserving the essence of the Minecraft experience. You can select blocks with the touchscreen, or browse through them using the circle and square buttons on your Xperia Play device. The first version also allows multi-player play on a local wireless network allowing you to build a world and invite friends to create a community. This version includes:
Randomized worlds * Build anything you can imagine * Build with 36 different kinds of blocks * Invite and play with your friends to your world (local wireless network) * Save multi-player worlds to your own phone
We're planning to keep the Pocket Edition in development for as long as we can just like the PC/Mac/Linux Minecraft version. We'd appreciate feedback from the Minecraft community about our new game, and what you would like to see in the next updates.
