A Brief Take Of Podcasting
Ever wonder about the evolution and development podcast? Although it is a relatively young technology it still has an intriguing, but brief history. The origins of the term, "podcast" is quite interesting and reflects how dynamic is that Internet community.

Podcasting is a term that was invented in 2004, and it combines two terms: iPod and broadcasting. It is ironic that this definition isn't entirely accurate as neither one of them is exact. The process of podcasting or listening to podcasts requires an iPod or any other portable player. Actually, podcasts can be listened to using any MP3 compatible device, including desktop computers. The name "podcast" was coined in part because the iPod of Apple Computer iPod was the highest-selling handheld digital music player at the time that podcasting started. In addition, no broadcast over the air broadcasting is required either.

Even Podcasts from the New Oxford American Dictionary jumped onto the bandwagon of podcasting by declaring "podcasting" term of the year in 2005. The term was defined as "a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar program, made available on the Internet for download onto an audio player for personal use." The word is expected to be included in the internet version during their next update.

The term, podcasting was coined by journalist Ben Hammersley, and then it was adopted by the former MTV VJ and media entrepreneur Adam Curry. Mr. Curry created an Applescript application that automated the process of downloading and syncing audio files onto iPods.

Alternative names or possible interpretations of "P-O-D" were proposed and the most well-liked of was "Personal on Demand". Technology writer, Doc Searls came up with the phrase in Septemberof 2004. Words like "audio-blogging" as well as podcasts" as well as "web-casting" are also offered to describe this unique form of media distribution.

Other "pod"-derived phrases include "podcasters" (those that create podcasts) along with "podcatchers" - the special RSS aggregators which periodically check for and download new content automatically. Podcatching software enables the user to copy podcasts into portable media & video players.

Popularity of the podcast is spreading quickly due to the rapid expansion of MP3 players and the desire of customers to be able to access new and exciting content. Podcasting has grown in popularity because it gives people more control over the content they listen to, and the freedom to take their shows to wherever they go.

The blogging technology seemed so unexpected and was so swiftly and widely accepted as podcasting. The industry's growth is anticipated to increase rapidly because of the rapid adoption of the technology by the radio broadcasting industry in 2005, and Apple's iTunes distribution. The increasing popularity of podcasts challenges traditional media's traditional broadcast model.

Even though iTunes is just two years old, roughly 4.8 million people downloaded podcasts podcast for 2005 as opposed to just under 800,000. in 2004. Furthermore, 11.4 million users are expected this year, according to research conducted by the Diffusion Group. Already the Apple iTunes service offers 15,000 podcasts and listeners have registered for more than 7 million subscriptions.

A study by Bridge Ratings in November 2005 that included radio listeners in ten national markets revealed that around 20% of those who have ever downloaded and listen to an podcast do so on a daily basis. This group downloads on average six podcasts per week and spends about four hours per month listening to podcasts downloaded.

The study also predicted dramatic growth in the industry to come in the near future. According to Bridge Ratings, by 2010, podcast audience growth is predicted to be at a moderate 45 million users who will have ever listened to an podcast. Some estimates suggest this figure will be at around 75 million by the end of this year.

What does this mean for you?

With podcast listening growing exponentially, podcasts offer you a powerful way to advertise your products or services. The best part about podcasts is that they're extremely simple and inexpensive to create. Podcasting can aid in establishing that you have a better relationship with your target audiences by offering them interesting regular updates about happenings in your field. If you own a website, then there's no reason you can't make a podcast accessible as it's not difficult to set up and can bring a significant increase in traffic to your website. So in short podcasting should be a key element of any online marketing campaign.
