Window Repairs: What's The Only Thing Nobody Is Discussing
When to Call in a Professional and When to Do it Yourself

Window repairs can be costly. But, it's important to understand when to engage a professional, and when you can do the work yourself.

A seal failure is indicated by dirt and water leaking through the window panes. This can result in poor performance of windows and higher bills for energy.

Adhesives sold in auto repair stores can be used to fix chips or cracked glass as well as sash issues.

Glass that has cracked

A stray piece of your lawnmowers that hits the window, or an impact from a door or window handle that's been slammed could crack glass. The good news is that cracked glass that isn't broken into pieces or a double-paned glass with a holes in both panes is often repaired by thoroughly cleaning the area and applying epoxy to the surface and let it cure.

This is the most time-intensive solution but also the most effective. Epoxy is a thermosetting substance that provides the most secure seal for windows. If executed correctly, it can even make a small crack disappear. Start by thoroughly cleaning your windows, and then filling in the cracks using the epoxy, which could take several attempts to ensure you've covered all of the surface area.

The type of epoxy that you need depends on the dimensions and shape of your cracks. For smaller repairs, search for a two-part blend consisting of two components: a hardener and a resin. The majority of these include a syringe to control the flow of resin and hardener, but you can also use a wooden stick for this purpose. Mix the epoxy for 20 seconds before applying it. It will take you 5 to 10 minutes to apply it before it starts to harden.

For more severe cracks, think about using a glass adhesive instead of epoxy. Glass adhesive is available at auto repair stores. It's designed to fix windshields, but it can work equally well on home windows. The product comes with clear instructions that will guide you through the application procedure.

After the epoxy has dried, scrape away any excess using a razor blade and clean the window with a clean rag moistened with acetone, to get rid of any epoxy raised above the crack. Spray the newly-repaired window with glass cleaner, and polish it using a clean rag, and your windows will look as good as new.

Stress cracks, which may appear on any glass surface, can appear across the entire window if not dealt with early. These cracks are often caused by temperature changes between your home and the outside. However, they could also be caused by repeatedly closing your windows or applying too much force to open them.

Broken Seals

If your window is triple or double pane or not the window will be susceptible to failure of the seal in the course of time. The window seal acts as the air between two zones of different temperatures--in other words outside air and inside air, which can stop the build-up of moisture and condensation. If the seal fails the moisture can get spread across windows, which can cause them to get smudges or drips. Foggy windows aren't only unsightly, but they can also lead to water damage and rot over time.

Fogging up windows is the primary sign of a broken window seal, but it's not just a matter of time. The water that escapes between the window panes is capable of covering a larger area than the glass. It is therefore important to find the cause of the problem and correct it as soon as you can.

A failed seal can cause various issues that go beyond the appearance of your window. They may also increase the cost of energy, as outside air will find its way into your home. This is especially true for windows that were insulated with inert gases like Krypton or argon to improve their insulation capabilities.

A damaged seal may not be as urgent as a crack in a window but it's still an issue that must be addressed. If you notice signs of a defective seal, it is best to call an expert in window installation as soon as you can. This will stop mold and decaying wood from occurring in your home.

The most popular method of fixing a broken seal is to replace the entire insulated glass unit (IGU) however this is typically only an option if the frame of the window isn't damaged or decaying, and should only be performed by an expert. It is also possible to apply caulk or weatherstripping around the sash, however this is more challenging and less long-lasting than replacing the entire window. Some firms offer the option of replacing only the IGU and not replacing the frame. However, this can be difficult to do and should only be performed by a certified window installation professional.

Expansion/Contraction Between Sashes/Frames

The breaking of a glass panel is a frequent issue for homeowners. This kind of damage caused by the impact of a ball or a storm, should be repaired as soon as is possible. The repair process isn't easy and expensive because a new glass pane must be crafted to match the existing window frame. The first step is to determine if the frame or the sash has been damaged. This will help you determine the best method of repair.

Older wood windows usually come with a "stop," which is a thin piece of wood that blocks the top sash from moving however it lets the bottom slide open. If the stop is damaged or worn out, it could cause a draft because air from outside can get between the sashes. This can be fixed by replacing the stop however, this is an instance in which it might make more sense to replace the entire window.

A window that lets in too much noise is a sign that it needs extensive repairs. The function of windows is to insulate the home, so if the windows are allowing the infiltration of too much traffic or other noises from the street, it may be time for an upgrade.

Many New Orleans homes have tall double-hung wooden windows made of sash. They allow breezes to flow through the home during hot temperatures. The bottom sash can be raised to pull hot and humid air from the house. Lowering the top sash will ventilate the house, and draw cool air from the outside. If the windows are not functioning as they should it could be due to deterioration of the weight and pulley systems hidden inside the frame, or to a build-up of paint.

Removing the built-up paint and fixing these parts will generally restore the functionality of the window. Sometimes, it is recommended to replace the entire window to ensure its durability. This is particularly true if there are major construction projects planned in the near future that involve the windows. A complete replacement could be a good idea when repairs are expected to be comparable to the cost of a new window.

Fog in between panes

If a double-pane window is getting fog, it's due to the seal between the panes of glass has failed. This is more prevalent in humid climates where moisture from the wooden frame may cause it to rot. The seal could then leak air. In this situation it is more beneficial to replace the window instead of repair it.

Window glass that is smudges can be a gruelling problem. It can be difficult to remove the water that has built up between the glass panes. This can decrease your window's energy efficiency and make it difficult to see outside. Fogging between upvc window repair can also be an indication of other issues, including mold and rot within the frame and its surrounding materials.

Moisture between the glass is typically caused by condensation. Condensation occurs when cool surfaces absorb water vapors from the air and then release it as the surface heats up. This is a normal phenomenon that can be seen on many surfaces, including windows. If you can wipe the condensation off your window, then it's likely to be just the result of humidity cooling and settled on the cooler glass.

In some cases glass may be permanently cloudy due to condensation or other issues that have compromised the seal between the panes. If this happens, call the manufacturer of your windows to see if your windows are still covered under warranty. If they are, replacing them is likely to be cheaper than repairing.

Some companies offer to repair or replace double-pane windows, without taking out the sash. This is done by drilling small holes between the panes, and then vacuuming out any trapped moisture. Then vents are added to the window to allow air flow. This can be a good way to get rid of the fog, but it's often short-lived. It doesn't repair or replace the inert gases between the panes. Replacing the IGU (insulated glazing unit) is the best choice for getting rid of persistent fogging. If you're not yet ready to invest in a replacement however, you can consider defogging agents that will assist in removing the moisture between the panes.
