Ambulance (DVD) Review initiatives
Director Michael Bay has had a rough go of it lately. Between bloated, unrelenting Transformers sequels and mediocre direct-to-video projects, it has been exhausting for audiences to get their fix of the action specialist's trademark giddy thrills. Thankfully, the person who made Armageddon and Bad Boys returns with Ambulance, a small-scale thriller that gives a satisfying shot of his signature type.

In a film that plays like one long, breathless automotive chase, the film follows navy veteran Will Sharp (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) as he seeks quick cash for his infirm wife and infant son. He's recruited by his brother, Danny Sharp (Jake Gyllenhaal), to help with a heist at a downtown Los Angeles financial institution. The two quickly find themselves ensnared in an escalating sequence of violence and deception.

What makes Ambulance interesting is the way it splices together action sequences of various types. The opening car chase feels completely genuine, with Bay's trademark high-octane visual type on full show: dazzling colours, shiny reverence for flipping automobiles, and the kind of vertiginous joy that comes from overhead drone photographs swooping atop skyscrapers as they observe down a cataclysmic crash in progress.

The modifying group likewise knows how to pull the viewers in and out of each new burst of frenetic power, building up suspense after which dropping back to disclose the characters' emotional states. 123hd has a deranged humorousness, too, with the occasional scene playing like a mash-up of Bong Joon-ho's Okja and Christopher Cross's ballad model of "Saving Private Ryan."

Despite its overlong working time, Ambulance has lots to offer followers of the director's work. Its heist is ruthlessly thrilling, and it's clear that both Abdul-Mateen and Gonzalez are having enjoyable with their roles. Gyllenhaal, then again, is at his most over-the-top, delivering his lines with the type of manic, zany enthusiasm that makes him a natural for movies like this.

For essentially the most half, Ambulance is freed from the sneering self-reference that has marred many of the director's more modern movies. Cam, Will's paramedic girlfriend played by Eiza Gonzalez, gets a number of scenes of her personal to shine via the chaos, but she's not given much room to develop as a personality past being his love curiosity..
