Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) have been used as the systems in drug delivery due to their exceptional physical and chemical properties. In this study, the adsorption of an anticancer drug Dacarbazine (DAC) into the inner and outer surface of pristine and Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes (FCNTs) with four carboxylic acid groups was investigated in aqueous solution using the Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. Our simulation results showed that in spite of the adsorption of drug molecules on the outer sidewall of pristine and functionalized nanotubes, the spontaneous encapsulation of DAC molecule into the cavity of CNTs and FCNTs is observed. The simulations show that the arrangement of the DAC molecule into the CNTs and FCNTs is controlled by π-π interactions.
Staphylococcus aureus infections remain associated with considerable morbidity and mortality in both hospitals and the community. There is little information regarding the role of ovarian hormones in infections caused by S. aureus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ovariectomy in the immune response induced by S. aureus.

Female mice BALB/c were ovariectomized (OVX) to significantly reduce the level of ovarian hormones. We also used sham-operated animals. The mice were inoculated intraperitoneally with S. aureus. Blood samples were collected for leukocyte count and bacterial quantification. The uterus and spleen were removed and weighed to calculate the uterine and splenic indexes. Lungs were removed and fractionated for immunohistochemical analysis for macrophage detection (anti-CD68) and relative gene expression of IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α by RT-PCR.

Ovariectomy enlarged spleen size and generally increased circulating lymphocytes. OVX females experienced a continuation of the initial rehocytes. OVX females experienced a continuation of the initial reduction of lymphocytes and a monocyte and neutrophil late response compared to shams (p≥0.05). Moreover, OVX females showed neutropenia after 168h of infection (p≥0.05). Macrophage response in the lungs were less pronounced in OVX females in the initial hours of infection (p≥0.01). OVX females showed a higher relative gene expression of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α in the lung at the beginning of the infection compared to sham females (p≥0.01). Among the uninfected females, the OVX control females showed a higher expression of IL-6 in the lung compared to the sham control females (p≥0.05). In this model, the lack of ovarian hormones caused a minor increase in circulating leukocytes during the initial stage of infection by S. aureus and increased pulmonary gene expression of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. Ovariectomy alone enlarged the spleen and increased circulating lymphocytes. Ovarian hormones acted as immunoprotectors against S. aureus infection.Penile strangulation is an uncommon urologic emergency that requires prompt evaluation and treatment to avoid disastrous consequences. Strangulation has been reported with objects ranging from hair tourniquets, to plastic rings, to iron rings. Strangulation with these devices can result in vascular congestion of the penis, swelling and eventual gangrene of the penis distal to the constricting device. We present a case report of a 43-year-old male who had a 2-day history of penile pain and swelling secondary to a metal ring constricting the proximal phallus. Ring removal was achieved with an orthopedic bolt cutter to cut the ring in two places, using a malleable retractor to act as a "backboard" to prevent iatrogenic injury to the penis. This study aims to analyze the correlation between environmental factors and confirmed cases of COVID-19 pandemic in Victoria, Mexico. The analysis is performed at the micro-level, filtering only confirmed cases of COVID-19 that are located near air quality monitoring stations, within an approximate coverage of 2.5 km, in order to identify a possible specific association between PM2.5, PM10, carbon monoxide (CO), relative humidity, temperature, absolute humidity, and total confirmed cases of COVID-19. The results evidenced that the cases of COVID-19 were very strongly associated with CO concentration. Our results also suggested that particulate matter pollution (PM2.5 and PM10) exposure have a significant correlation for confirmed cases of COVID-19. Furthermore, we studied the changes in air quality during the COVID-19 outbreak by comparing the average concentration of the four weeks before lockdown (February 16 to March 14, 2020) and the following twelve weeks during the partial lockdown (March 15 to June 06, 2020), revealing a very significant decrease of pollutants.Lead (Pb) exposure is often determined through the analysis of whole blood though venipuncture poses ethical, economic, and logistical barriers. Dried Blood Spots (DBS) may help overcome such barriers though past studies measuring Pb in DBS have been challenged with quality control, small sample volumes, and other issues. Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence (TXRF) may help address some of these challenges but has yet to be used to measure Pb in DBS. As such, the aim of the current study was to develop, validate, and apply a method to analyze Pb in DBS samples using TXRF for use in human biomonitoring studies. First, we developed a novel method (tested a range of parameters), and then used blood reference materials to validate the method against performance criteria listed in ICH Q2A and Q2B and the European Bioanalysis Forum. Finally, we applied the method to two populations who exemplify divergent conditions (41 university members with relatively low Pb exposures sampled in a clinical environment; 40 electroandard (i.e., ICP-MS analysis of whole blood), and helps overcome some of the challenges associated with current methods. In the last decades, there has been an increasing concern about the human exposure to indoor dust. Therefore, it is imperative to assess the toxicity of indoor dust and associated dust extracts. In this study, the acute toxicity assessment of indoor dust was performed using a bioluminescence test, with Photobacterium phosphoreum T3 (PPT3) chosen as the test bacterium. The different indoor dust samples were collected from residences, offices, dormitories and laboratories in Shanghai, China. Our data reveal that PPT3 is more active to water-soluble ions and organic contaminants at low concentrations, while extract solutions elicit increased bacterial toxicity at high concentrations. The results of a bioluminescence assay by PPT3 indicated that the dust organic extracts exhibited increased toxicity compared with the water exacts. Dust extracts from the laboratory exhibited the greatest bacterial toxicity when compared with office, dormitory and residence samples. Moreover, office dust exhibited higher bacterial toxicity than residence dust. Furthermore, the comprehensive toxicity of dust on PPT3 was assessed by extracts toxicity -addition (i.e. IRaddition). The calculated values were close to the corresponding experimental data. The bioluminescence test showed the indoor dust samples are weakly toxic to PPT3, which are equivalent to 0.046-0.123 mg Hg•L-1. Different dust extracts among the different sampling sites showed varying toxicity to PPT3. This study provides some important information to understand the potential health risk from different indoor environment using a rapid bioluminescence assay.Exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has been associated with adverse health outcomes, especially when exposure occurs within sensitive time windows such as the pre- and post-natal periods and early childhood. However, few studies have focused on PFAS exposure distribution and predictors in pregnant women, especially among African American women. We quantified serum concentrations of the four most common PFAS collected in all 453 participants and an additional 10 PFAS in 356 participants who were pregnant African American women enrolled from 2014 to 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia, and investigated the sociodemographic predictors of exposure. Additional home environment and behavior predictors were also examined in 130 participants. Selleck R-848 Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) were detected in >95% of the samples with PFOS having the highest concentrations (geometric mean (GM) 2.03 ng/mL). N-Methyl perf the setting of research priorities and enable development of exposure mitigation strategies.Increasing seawater temperature affects growth, reproduction, development, and various other physiological processes in aquatic organisms, such as marine invertebrates, which are especially susceptible to high temperatures. In this study, we examined the effects of short-term heat stress (16, 22, 26, and 30 °C for 1-week exposure) on prooxidant-antioxidant homeostasis and redox status in the American oyster (Crassostrea virginica, an edible and commercially cultivated bivalve mollusk) under controlled laboratory conditions. Immunohistochemical and real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) analyses were performed to examine the expression of heat shock protein-70 (HSP70, a biomarker of heat stress), catalase (CAT, an antioxidant), superoxide dismutase (SOD, an antioxidant), dinitrophenyl protein (DNP, a biomarker of reactive oxygen species, ROS), and 3-nitrotyrosine protein (NTP, an indicator of reactive nitrogen species, RNS), in the gills and digestive glands of oysters. In situ TUNEL assay was performed to detect cellular apoptosis in tissues. Histological analysis showed an increase in mucus secretion in the gills and digestive glands of oysters exposed to higher temperatures (22, 26, and 30 °C) compared to control (16 °C). Immunohistochemical and qRT-PCR analyses showed significant increases in HSP70, DNP and NTP protein, and mRNA expressions in tissues at higher temperatures. Cellular apoptosis was also significantly increased at higher temperatures. Thus, heat-induced oxidative and nitrative stress likely occur due to overproduction of ROS and RNS. Interestingly, expression of CAT and SOD increased in oysters exposed to 22 and 26 °C, but was at or below control levels in the highest temperature exposure (30 °C). Collectively, these results suggest that elevated seawater temperatures cause oxidative/nitrative stress and induce cellular apoptosis through excessive ROS and RNS production, leading to inhibition of the antioxidant defense system in marine mollusks.Mind wandering (MW) refers to a drift of attention away from the ongoing events to internal concerns and activates brain regions in the default mode network (DMN) and the frontoparietal control network (FPCN). Although a number of studies using rest-fMRI data have shown that static and dynamic functional connectivity within the DMN were related to individual variations in self-reported MW, whether the brain functional connectivity could predict MW remained unclear. Here, we carried out longitudinal data collection from 122 participants that underwent three times of MRI scans and simultaneously completed self-reported MW scales over the course of two years to clarify whether a direct relationship existed between brain functional connectivity and MW. We identified 16 functional connectivity involving the DMN and FPCN that were consistently and stably associated with MW across the three time points. However, there were only significant cross-lagged effects between DMN-involved connections and MW frequency rather than FPCN-involved connections.
