Acute alcohol consumption disrupts memory formation and produces short-term overeating. In two studies, we investigated whether alcohol consumption can affect meal-related memories and later food intake. Study 1 (N = 60, 50% male) investigated how consumption of an alcoholic drink (0.5 g/kg) prior to consumption of a lunch meal affected meal memory of that lunch, and later food intake, compared with a placebo-alcohol. Findings revealed that alcohol consumption did not impair meal memory, and did not affect subsequent food intake. Study 2 (N = 72, 50% male) investigated whether, due to alcohol's retrograde facilitation effect (the enhancement of recall due to reduced interference at the point of exposure) consuming alcohol after consumption of a lunch meal could enhance meal memory, compared with when consumed before a lunch meal (both a dosage of 0.6 g/kg), and compared with consumption of a soft drink. Contrary to prediction, alcohol consumed after a lunch meal did not significantly increase meal memory. But, certain types of meal memory were impaired when alcohol was consumed before the meal, compared with consumption of a soft drink. Subsequent food intake did not differ between conditions. Taken together, findings suggest that alcohol intoxication can impair some forms of meal memory recall, likely due to disruption of memory formation during the encoding phase. However, there was no evidence that this impairment contributes towards alcohol-induced overeating.Chile recently implemented a food labeling law that requires packaged foods with sugar, saturated fats, sodium, and/or calorie content that exceeds government-defined thresholds to carry a front-of-package warning for each excessive nutrient. This law does not prohibit the use of nutrient content (NC) marketing claims on packages, as long as the claims do not directly contradict the warnings. Yet, having NC claims alongside nutrient warnings might send mixed messages confusing consumers about the overall healthiness of a product. The present study tests the co-occurrence of warning labels and NC claims in breakfast cereal packages on product perceptions and behavioral intentions of Chilean adults in a 3 (warnings none, high calorie, high calorie/high sugar) × 3 (NC claims none, fiber/wholegrain, low fat/cholesterol-free) mixed-measures experiment. Fiber-related claims had a main effect leading to more positive ratings of the product, compared to having no NC claims or fat-related claims. These positive ratings extended beyond perceptions of the fiber content to perceptions of overall healthiness, naturalness, quality, vitamin content, and intentions to purchase and recommend the product-a health halo effect. No significant interaction between warnings and NC claims was found. However, warnings had a main effect on perceptions irrespective of the presence of NC claims, with one warning significantly reducing ratings, dampening any halo effects, and two warnings further dampening any effects. Thus, some pinniped species seem able to use olfaction in both social and foraging contexts and to discriminate between different odors in air including both natural and artificial odors, but studies on that topic remain scarce. Here, we studied the olfactory capabilities of California sea lions living in captivity at La Flèche Zoo (France) in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. We used two categories of odors social odors (from familiar individuals of the same group, unfamiliar individuals from another Zoo, animal zookeepers and a terrestrial carnivore) and non-social odors (food and odors identified as repellents in certain vertebrates). Several behavioral parameters were measured and analyzed as the number and duration of contact with the odor, mouth openings, vocalizations (air only) and air bubble production (water only). Our results, although limited by the low number of animals monitored (n = 5), suggest that California sea lions are able to discriminate between different odors both in the air and under water. In the aquatic environment, the process allowing the perception of odors remains to be characterized. Applications to this work could be considered in captive conditions as well as in the wild.
Recurrent somatic mutations in the JAK2, calreticulin (CALR), and the MPL genes are described as drivers of BCR-ABL1-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) that includes polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocytosis (ET), primary myelofibrosis (PMF), and MPN unclassified (MPN-U).

We describe the mutation profile and clinical features of MPN cases diagnosed at a tertiary care center. JAK2V617F and MPL (S505/W515) mutations were screened by allele-specific polymerase chain reaction, while CALR exon 9 and JAK2 exon 12 mutations were screened by fragment analysis/Sanger sequencing. Among the 1,570 patients tested for these mutations during the study period, 407 were classified as MPN with a diagnosis of PV, ET, PMF, and MPN-U seen in 30%, 17%, 36%, and 17%, respectively, screened.

Similar to previous reports from Asian countries, the incidence of PMF was the highest among the classic MPN. JAK2V617F mutation was detected in 90% of PV, 38% of ET, 48% of PMF, and 65% of MPN-U. JAK2 exon 12 mutations were seen in 5.7% of PV and 1.4% of PMF. CALR exon 9 mutations were seen in 33% of ET, 33% of PMF, and 12% of MPN-U. MPL mutations were detected in 2.8%, 2.7%, and 2.9% of ET, PMF, and MPN-U, respectively. Fifteen % of PMF, 26% of ET, and 22% of MPN-U were triple negative.

There was a significantly higher incidence of CALR mutation in PMF and ET cases. Our study highlights the challenges in the diagnosis of JAK2-negative PV and the need for harmonization of criteria for the same.

In the pre-TKI era, front-line allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) represented the standard approach for patients with chronic phase-CML (CP-CML) who were deemed fit to tolerate the procedure and had a human leukocyte antigen compatible donor available. Currently, CP-CML patients are eligible for allo-HCT only if they fail more than one TKI and/or are intolerant to the drug. We performed a systematic review/meta-analysis of the available literature to assess the evidence regarding allo-HCT efficacy in CP-CML patients. Data from eligible studies were extracted in relation to benefits (overall survival [OS], progression-free survival, disease-free survival [DFS], complete remission [CR], and molecular response [MR]) and harms (nonrelapse mortality [NRM], relapse, and acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease), and stratified by age into adult and pediatric groups.
