Breech birth

The brachialplexus is an intricate network of nerves which transmits signals from the spinal cord to the shoulder, elbow wrist, fingers and wrist. The nerves can be damaged during childbirth and cause arm paralysis. Erb's palsy is a form of birth injury to the brachial plexus that may be serious or mild. It affects the upper portion of nerves in the brachial plexus and usually does not hinder movement of the lower arm (like wiggling the fingers).


Breech birth occurs when the feet of a newborn come out in front of its head. This can cause a baby's shoulders to get stuck in the birth canal during labor. In these situations, doctors frequently use forceps or vacuum tubes to take the shoulders of a baby out of the birthing canal. This can cause nerve damage and may lead to erb's paralysis.

In less severe cases of the Erb's Palsy, upper nerves within the brachialplexus are stretched without breaking. This is referred to as neuropraxia, and it will heal on its own within several months. In more severe instances it is possible that the lower nerves within the brachial nerve plexus can be damaged. These injuries are more difficult to heal from and may lead to the formation of scar tissue known as a nerve, which can press on healthy nerve fibers and limit the healing process.

Gestational diabetes

Macrosomia can develop when a pregnant woman develops gestational diabetic. This occurs when the foetus converts excess glucose into fat, which results in an extremely large baby. These babies are at greater risk of shoulder dystocia and brachial plexus injury and other birth-related injuries.

If a doctor is treating a woman with gestational diabetes and they need to watch the fetus carefully for signs of macrosomia. This includes checking her blood sugar levels, giving her insulin, and giving birth to a baby via C-section, if necessary.

During childbirth, the Obstetrician's role is to give birth without causing harm to the mother or child. If the doctor causes Erb’s palsy by putting too much pressure on a baby's shoulders or body, it could be considered medical negligence. In some cases, the baby's shoulders may get stuck between the pelvic bones during the birth. This is called shoulder dystocia. It is a serious birth complications. If it injures the nerves that control the shoulder and arm it may cause Erb's palsy. In the most severe instances, it may result in oxygen deprivation for the baby during birth.

Doctors can safely remove a baby from this position using a variety of maneuvers. They can also perform a C-section under anesthesia, which is safer for the baby and the mother.

This can cause an injury to the brachial-plexus if the doctor applies too much force or tension to the baby's head. This is called a shoulder dystocia or an ailment of Erb's syndrome called brachial plexus birth palsy.

The condition is caused due to an injury to nerves that connect the spine, shoulder, arm and hands. It can result in a permanent loss of muscle movement and sensation or it may be temporary and resolve within hours to months.

Cephalopelvic disproportion

CPD occurs when the baby's head grows larger than the mother's pelvic cavity during labor. This condition requires assisted delivery methods, like vacuum extractors and forceps, to facilitate a vaginal delivery. However, this type of delivery is risky for the mother and baby that could result in serious injuries, such as Erb's paralysis.

If the doctor suspects CPD they should prescribe medications like Pitocin to help the progress of labor. They must also be prepared to perform an Cesarean section if needed to prevent serious complications.

Unfortunately, the true CPD can't always be diagnosed before labor starts. If a physician notices that labor isn't progressing in the way they expected it is recommended to look at the pelvic bones of the mother and use instruments such as ultrasounds and radiologic pelmetography. They should also look for indications of CPD like a slow or non-existent dilation or thinning of the cervix. If a doctor fails to recognize CPD it is possible for a child to be seriously injured during vaginal birth or be forced to undergo an emergency Cesarean.
