The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) published the reference measurement procedure (RMP) for ALP measurement in 2011. However, the RMP is of high requirements for laboratories, complicated, time-consuming and high cost of reagents. Many manufacturers do not trace results to the higher procedure. And there is currently no designated comparison method (DCM) for ALP measurement. Thus, the standardization of ALP measurement is hindered. Automatic biochemical analyzers are easy to operate and widely used in clinical laboratories. Therefore, according to the RMP, establishing a DCM based on an automatic biochemical analyzer will be a practical way to establish traceability to the accuracy base and promote the standardization of ALP measurement. On the basis of conforming to the RMP recommended by IFCC as far as possible, the DCM was established based on a Thermo Indiko automatic biochemical analyzer. Performances of the method were validated. The DCM repeatability and within laboratory imprecision was less then 1% and less then 2.5%, respectively. For evaluation of trueness, the biases were within the equivalent limits. Measurement procedure comparisons and biases estimation were carried out between the DCM, the RMP, and the six routine methods using a panel of 40 individual human serum samples. The comparisons between the DCM and the RMP gave satisfying results. Compared with the DCM, the relative biases of some routine methods failed to meet the bias limit derived from biological variation.Objective To summarize the available literature on in utero exposure to maternal rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and its influence on the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) in offspring.Method We conducted a systematic literature review and assessed the internal validity of studies with the Newcastle Ottawa Scale tool.Results Six studies were included. Three reported on autism spectrum disorders; one cohort study indicated a slightly elevated risk, and two case-control studies reported too few cases for risk assessment. Two large cohort studies reported elevated hazard ratios for epilepsy in offspring, in overlapping populations. One study on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) reported higher odds for maternal RA during pregnancy, among children with ADHD.ConclusionFew studies were found specifically studying maternal RA during pregnancy and NDDs in offspring. The studies pointed towards a moderately higher risk of these outcomes; however, reporting bias appears to be a problem. Additional studies of appropriate design and power are needed.
To better document the risk of permanent hair and nail loss after total skin electron beam therapy (TSEBT) for mycosis fungoides (MF).

Interviews and evaluations were conducted in 13 patients with MF treated with TSEBT alone and two patients treated with concomitant TSEBT and chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (CHOP). Evaluated parameters included time to hair and nail loss and regrowth, the density of hair regrowth, and quality of hair and nail regrowth.

Most patients had complete loss of scalp hair during treatment, and new growth appeared about 2 months following treatment completion. After 18 months, most patients felt their hair had regrown to about 70% of baseline thickness without cosmetically obvious alopecia. The patients treated with TSEBT and concomitant chemotherapy had substantially less scalp hair regrowth with persistent cosmetically obvious alopecia. Some lost eyebrows and eyelashes, but complete or near-complete regrowth generally occurred. Most patients lost their nails following TSEBT, with complete regrowth noted by most patients 5 months after treatment. New nails were most often normal, but a few patients developed post-therapy nail dystrophies.

Given its high prevalence and the impact on the health system, it is important to characterize these patients, in order to offer an accurate diagnosis and a proper treatment. As the diagnosis of VM is based on clinical features, the study of potential biomarkers has gained more interest in the last years, to improve the precision in the diagnosis of this disease. TGF-beta inhibitor The aim of this review is to summarize the main tests available for the diagnosis of VM, including the accuracy of biomarkers for the diagnosis of VM.Areas covered This review summarizes the main information on VM, including all diagnosis records published in the field in the last 10 years, and focusing on candidate biomarkers for the diagnosis of VM patients.Expert opinion There is a limited knowledge in the pathophysiology of VM. The search of biomarkers for diagnosis of VM is needed to improve the precision in the diagnosis promoting clinical and translational research.
