-"Greenlight" the script. Check and approve or disapprove before students begin shooting.
-It's all about the writing. That's where they learn the material. If you don't come up with it before, it won't happen while filming.
-Determine what you want students to know at the end of the project in detail (be specific about what is in the script)
-Establish audience and purpose. (inform, entertain, persuade)
-Establish a structure. (problem->resolution, problem->solution, problem->exposition->solution.) The ending is usually the toughest part.
-Two Column scripts. One column is video (camera shots, etc), one is audio(lines, music, etc).
-Storyboard with camera shots and lines to "rough draft"
-Plan shots before production. Vary the shots. Long to establish setting, medium(waist up) for dialogue, close shots to establish emotions. Start with closest possible shot and move out.
-Roles: Director of Photography, Script Supervisor, Light and sound technician.
-Shot composition. Keep camera as still as possible. Camera should pan smoothly, never pan zoomed in. Bounce is exaggerated.
-Sound: As close to possible to the subject. Eliminate as much unwanted sound as possible. Avoid noisy places with lots of background noise, unplug noisy items like computer carts, fans, etc.
-Lighting: make sure subject is well lit from the front. Don't shoot into a strong light source unless you're trying to achieve a silhouette effect.
