'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th

A little over an year after introducing Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week that it will end the game later in the year. Minecraft Earth players have until June 30th, 2021 to play the game in augmented reality before Microsoft shuts down its servers and it's not available for download from the app marketplaces.

Developer Mojang Studios blamed the coronavirus pandemic and the changes to daily life that have come with it for the closure. Art Talk The studio stated that Minecraft Earth was built around the concept of free movement and collaborative play. Like Niantic with Pokemon Go, Mojang had altered the game to make it easier to play at home. These tweaks clearly weren't enough.

After many amazing adventures, we've made the difficult decision of closing down Minecraft Earth in June 2021. We're so grateful for all your help, and today's last build includes several adjustments to make these final months as enjoyable as we can:

- Minecraft (@Minecraft) 1 January 5, 2021. But there's some good news in today's news: Mojang plans on presenting Minecraft Earth with style. Mojang has released a final update for Minecraft Earth. It contains modifications that "make your time in Minecraft Earth more enjoyable." This update also eliminates real-money transactions, and significantly reduces the time for players to build and craft items within the game. It also offers players the chance to look at all the content that Mojang was working on prior to today's announcement. Mojang said that they are hoping that the changes will allow players to explore, create and share more while staying safe in their homes.

When June 30th arrives and expires, Microsoft will delete player data on July 1st. If you spent money in Minecraft Earth at any point during the course of the game, you'll get tokens that allow you to download the Bedrock version of Minecraft on your mobile device. More information on the shutdown on the Minecraft website.

For Microsoft this is certainly an unhappy conclusion for Minecraft Earth. The company had high expectations for the game when it was first demonstrated at WWDC 2019. The fact that Minecraft Earth couldn't survive through the epidemic, despite all the resources of Microsoft available isn't a positive indicator for the future of consumer AR applications.

Mojang stated that they're forever thankful for the extraordinary talent of the Minecraft community. "This was not an easy choice, and we're doing all we can to make sure you get the most out of Minecraft Earth before it sunsets."
