Minecraft YouTube Videos have been Watched 47bn Times

Children and adults alike aren't playing Minecraft in their millions: they're watching YouTube videos created using Minecraft and they are getting billions of views.



Octoly, an online video platform, has published a report that attempts to quantify this. It claims that Minecraft videos were watched 30.8 billion times in June 2014. Only the 183 million views were from Mojang, Mojang's publisher.



That's nearly three times the number of views for videos on Grand Theft Auto, which Octoly believed was the second most popular gaming brand on YouTube with close to 12 billion views, ahead of Call of Duty (10.2 billion), Angry Birds (six billion) and Halo (4.8 billion).

According to the company, Minecraft videos have been watched 16 billion times since June, bringing the total to 47.4 billion views. "In June our Octoly360 system identified 81,000 distinct YouTube creators discussing Minecraft," explained Octoly. "Today there are twice as many creator channels that feature Minecraft videos than there were in June," Octoly explained.



Minecraft being so far ahead of rival brands will not be a shock to anyone who's been following the game and/or the evolution of YouTube over the last couple of years.



In a chart of the top 100 YouTube channels in September 2014 published by the industry website Tubefilter, based on data from analytics firm OpenSlate, child-friendly Minecraft channel Stampy was the third biggest channel in the world , with 189.6 million views during the month.



The most popular of the month were channels with a heavy or total Minecraft focus, such as Vegetta (eighth in the world with 164 million views in September) and The Diamond Minecart (10th with 161.8 million).



Mojang has been a partner to its YouTube community since the early days of Minecraft by avoiding copyright disputes with creators of videos, and not allowing any input to the content of their videos.



"We have a plethora of people making their living solely making videos about Minecraft. Vu Bui, Mojang's chief operating executive has told the Guardian that the financial benefits of Minecraft are incredible.



"That isn't a problem and I would say that it actually enhances Minecraft the experience to witness people who are incredibly talented doing things. We've essentially outsourced YouTube videos to a global community of millions of people, and the content they create is more innovative than anything we could ever create by ourselves."



YouTube is a big part of the reason why Minecraft is such a popular well-loved and popular gaming brand in 2014 - and it's also a major reason for Microsoft's decision purchase Mojang for $2.5bn this summer.



Microsoft isn't just buying a game that's sold more than 54m copies across computer, console and mobile: it's buying one of the world's biggest television brands. Despite the fact that it's huge popularity is online instead of on traditional television.
