Teori Hukum Hubble: Semua galaksi yang ada di jagat raya ini mengalami redshift. Ini disebabkan oleh mengembangnya jagat raya ini. Maka dari itu semakin jauh jarak dua galaksi, laju menjauhnya pun semakin besar, dengan nilai yang sebanding dengan jaraknya. Dari hukum Hubble tersebut lahirlah sebuah parameter yang menyatakan laju pengembangan alam semesta disaat-saat tertentu, yang disebut dengan parameter Hubble. 'Nilai pada saat tertentu' tersebut dinamakan konstanta Hubble, yang pada saat ini besarnya adalah sekitar 72 km/s/Mpc.
Keterangan tambahan: 1 Mpc = jarak yang tempuh cahaya dengab laju 300.000 km/s selama 3,26 juta tahun.
