Mojang's breakout smash Minecraft came in second place on Google's list of the most popular YouTube searches of 2014. It was ranked just behind "music" in terms of frequency of searches.
According to Google, "Minecraft" was most frequently searched on YouTube in 2014 than "movies". PewDiePie, a gaming personality was also among the most searched terms on YouTube in 2014. Minecraft Crafting This was due to queries for Disney's Frozen as well as for the artists Drake and Beyonce.
Google reports that users are increasingly searching for gaming-related content and engaging with them more frequently even though a majority of those surveyed don't identify themselves as gamers. YouTube videos in the "Gaming" category topped the top of the service's Top 10 Most Popular list on 25 different days in October 2014.
"A Google Consumer Survey fielded in October 2014 of those who claimed to watch gaming videos on YouTube revealed that only a portion of this group (37 percent) consider themselves gamers"" the report says. "When asked about their motives for watching gaming videos, users mentioned 'entertainment' and 'humor frequently, but also mentioned 'learning new strategies' or 'game tips.'"
The report continues: "We also wanted to learn why people are drawn to videos by creators such as PewDiePie and SkyDoesMinecraft. Many of the fans responded, "Because they are hilarious!" The videos were even described as stand-up comedy. An up-and-coming gaming creator summed the interest in the video with the following analogy: "You don't have to play soccer to enjoy it on television.'"
