Epic Games 'definitely Won't' Follow Minecraft NFT Ban

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says his firm "definitely won't" follow Minecraft developers in banning nonfungible tokens (NFTs).

As previously reported, Minecraft developers Mojang Studios have banned NFT integrations on Wednesday, since it believes the speculative element of NFTs together with the their scarcity and risk of exclusion and frauds associated with NFTs being incompatible with the game's rules.

The move was viewed as highly controversial in the NFT community, while it has been met with praise by the community of crypto-skeptic players.

Sweeney's company is the creators of the highly successful battle royal game Fortnite and is seen as a Metaverse platform. Although Epic Games isn't necessarily pro-crypto or NFTs, the CEO said Epic Games doesn't intend to enforce any views regarding the subject on its users:

Developers should have the freedom to create their own games, and you should be able to decide whether or not to play them. I believe that stores and operating system makers shouldn't interfere in any way by imposing their ideas on other players. We certainly won't.

In response to the post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games' policy on prohibiting "hateful/discriminatory content" differs from this. Sweeney replied that Epic Games makes "editorial" judgments, however NFTs aren't currently under their remit.

He stated that a store could not make such decisions and would only play any legal game, draw a line at accepted norms like we do, or allow games that are in line with the owner's personal opinions.

The NFT ban by Mojang Studios has left one particular project dubbed NFT Worlds with a significant issue to resolve, given that it was developed on one of Minecraft's open source servers.

Play-to-earn (P2E) is an online platform that is driven by the community for play-to earn (P2E) offers an entire ecosystem of NFT and crypto built around. The NFTs it uses generate 51,000 Ether (ETH), which is $80.8 million worth of trading volume at the time. Since the news broke however, the floor price of its NFTs has fallen from 3.33 ETH to 1.01 ETH as of the time of writing, and its native token WRLD has plunged by 55% in that time frame.

The NFT Worlds team said that they are currently "brainstorming" solutions to the Mojang announcement. The team mentioned that it is trying to reach out to Minecraft to explore if a solution is possible. Otherwise, a pivot to a "Minecraft-like game engine" or GameFi platform has been outlined as possible possibilities.
