Minecraft: Dungeons Preview

David Nisshagen laughs in delight as he leads his blocky character down the narrow, elevated platform that is surrounded by violet flames. He's just discovered an undiscovered room in Minecraft Dungeons, and even as the title's executive producer He's not sure what's going to happen. The smile on his face can be audible through our Discord call.

He said, "This is very rare." "This is very rare. OK?" I laugh and inform my friend that he's excited.

He says, "Yes," but the guy doesn't know what the reason. This is incredible. Okay, so we have some very scary and mysterious items here. I've just discovered something that could prove to be very useful to me later in the game or should I go back to the game.

Minecraft Dungeons is an adventure game that is influenced by classic dungeon crawlers such as Diablo or The Binding of Isaac, but with the franchise's distinctive kid-friendly style. It has online and local multiplayer, randomly generated levels, and a myriad of familiar and new enemies, such as skeletons creepers and spiders. The whole thing looks similar to Minecraft, but it represents a innovative approach to game development by Mojang.

Microsoft bought Mojang the Swedish studio behind Minecraft for $2.5 billion in 2014. Today, it is under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella. This doesn't mean that Minecraft Dungeons will be exclusive to Microsoft platforms. The full game is set to release on PlayStation 4, Switch, Xbox One and Windows on May 26th.

For more than a decade, the company has focused on Minecraft the world-wide phenomenon that has introduced generations of youngsters and adults to sandbox style video games. Minecraft Dungeons is the studio's first real attempt at a brand new category, and has been in development for at around four years.

The game's plot is straightforward and appropriately epic: An villager who is outcast -- referred to in the game as an illagerfound an orb with power and is using it to conquer the world of the dead with a army of villagers under his command. The players travel through different regions battling the Arch-Illager's minions, until finally facing off with the orb-holder himself.

Mojang introduced illagers into the base Minecraft game in 2016 although Nisshagen claimed that these creatures were actually created in the Dungeons development room.

He explained that we required an enemy that was humanoid, with a ranged attack and a fast-following hunting mechanism. After all, Nisshagen said, it was possible to run away from zombies in Minecraft instead of fighting them in combat, and Dungeons developers wanted something that would encourage combat. "They do pursue you with axes and hunt you down, and that was so appreciated by the Minecraft team that they implemented it in that game before we even released Dungeons."

In actual fact, Dungeons began as an internal concept for the Nintendo 3DS.

"You can't fit Minecraft as a complex game, onto this," Nisshagen said. This is why the developers chose the top-down view instead of the first-person perspective of the original game and focused on building an environment that is full of opportunities for discovery and surprise.

"You cannot take the entire Minecraft game," he said. "You should not make it easy and narrow it down to its core elements. ...We focused on exploration and the sense of adventure. The players must feel like they're in the middle of an adventure. We then take the creativity Minecraft players employ to create all the amazing things in the game. We try to let them use that in our sort-of progression system, which is the word."

Minecraft Dungeons doesn't use a traditional progression system based on RPGs, and it doesn't force players into specific roles. Instead of having rigid classes like "healer" or "tank" in the game, players are able to swap out their equipment on the fly and combine items to provide their weapons with whatever abilities are needed in the current situation.

"You can think of our transforming that sandbox concept into the progression system," Nisshagen said. "There's absolutely no constraints. You can do anything you want. There are some really bad choices you could make, but there are extremely good or powerful choices you can make."

There isn't a wrong way to play Minecraft Dungeons. This is essential for developers, particularly when considering the intended players that Minecraft is aimed at: children and their parents. As a brand, Minecraft is geared toward younger players, whereas dungeon-crawler games are generally built for adults, featuring extensive inventories and progression trees and a challenging combat arena. Minecraft Dungeons is an attempt to appeal to both of these markets.

Nisshagen said that she believes that parents play with their children, or older siblings and younger ones together. The system is full of depth. Anyone with a degree of gaming experience will probably find cool combinations of things to look into, from a game mechanics point of view. And for the rest of us, you can just enter and click-mash and have a good time too."

Drop-in multiplayer is available both locally and online. Minecraft Servers Each stage adjusts to the number of players. There's no friendly fire, except for TNT boxes which can harm friends and family members alike when they explode.

Cross-platform play will not be available at launch but it is "absolutely" possible down the road, Nisshagen stated.

He stated that "we're not a large dev team." (Mojang's About Page lists 71 employees). "Just being able to release the same game to PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and Windows that's an amazing thing in and of itself. We want cross-play to be available as soon as we can. However, we want to ensure we have an excellent multiplayer experience on our own platforms first.

In many ways, Minecraft Dungeons is the natural evolution of the Minecraft franchise. For many 2000s-era kids, Minecraft was the first game they played due to its being easy to play, fun social, and easy to learn. In the past decade the same players are hungry for something more complicated, and Minecraft Dungeons is an obvious, well-known answer.
