My Video Games Can Hurt My Eyes
Whether it’s on your phone, tablet, PC, or television, chances are you’ve played some kind of video game recently. From Candy Crush to Angry Birds to Minecraft, video gaming long ago entered - and conquered - the mainstream.
What does this mean for your eyes health? Does it really mean that video games are bad for your eyes?
Computer Vision Syndrome
It's true that extended gaming sessions on video may have short-term negative effects on your eye health. Computer vision syndrome, also known as digital eye strain is what the American Optometric Association refers to. Utilizing too much digital devices such as tablets and computers can lead to headaches, eye strain, dry eye, and fatigue in your shoulders and neck.
It can be caused by glare or low screen contrast, which makes your eyes work harder than normal. Computer vision syndrome is more prevalent in video games as opposed to when you use your devices for everyday activities.
Eye strain can be reduced by using proper lighting. Take frequent breaks to rest your eyes, blink frequently and make sure you have adequate lighting to minimize glare. It could appear like you aren't getting enough power but your eyes will be thankful.

What is 3D?
3D gaming has brought up new concerns. This was further exacerbated by Nintendo's announcement that children younger than 3 years of age should not have access to the 3D mode on their portable 3DS system. While research is ongoing however the AOA believes that children may find 3D games beneficial. That's because playing 3D video games may help identify early warning signs of ocular disorders or difficulty in seeing 3D games can be an indication of eye issues that might otherwise be unnoticed and not be diagnosed.
How Gaming Helps Your Eyes
However, that's not the only ways video games could actually help your eyesight. According to the National Institute of Health, studies prove that playing action video games improves certain aspects of visual processing, such as spatial resolution, which means that players are able to see things more easily and clearer. Doctors have successfully used video game therapy to treat and correct amblyopia, also known as lazy eye.
So, go on and play video games. Be sure to control your play. Because when it comes to your eyes it is possible to be too many good things.
