Avanos Medical, a U.S. Avanos Medical feeding tube Food and Drug Administration (FDA) company recalls Cortrak*2 enteral access device because of misplacement of nasoenteric tubes or nasogastric tubs, which could have led to injuries or even patient deaths. The recall covers 629 devices sold within the United States.

If a tube is placed improperly it is possible for patients to suffer injury to their vocal cords, lungs, or trachea. Cortrak 2 eternal access system Avanos Medical has reported that there have already been 60 injuries and 23 deaths due to incorrect placement of the nasogastric feeding tubes with CORTRAK*2's Ental Access System. Injuries have included respiratory failure pneumothorax (collapsed lung), perforation (a hole in the lung's wall, esophagus or the bowel) as well as pneumonia. an effusion of the pleura (excess fluid that has accumulated between the chest cavity and the lungs).
Avanos Medical Avanos Medical has described a plan to supply users with updated labeling, to confirm the proper placement of nasogastric and nasoenteric tubes prior to use.
Avanos is the FDA's second caution about insertal feeding tubes. In February the FDA issued a cautionary note to parents and healthcare professionals regarding the risk of strangulation when children are fed by feeding tubes. Two deaths due to strangulation in children was reported in 2021 as a result of tubes that were wrapped around a patient’s neck.
