Minecraft Says "No" To NFTs

Mojang Studios, the makers of the popular Minecraft is taking a page from the traditional U.S. anti-drugs playbook, however it appears "Just Say No" is more effective for blockchain-based money making schemes than it did for drugs.

The studio, owned by Microsoft, wrote on its blog Wednesday that NFTs in Minecraft "are generally not something we will support or allow." The company also stated that it was changing its Minecraft Usage Guidelines to clarify that blockchain tech will not be allowed to integrate into the Minecraft game client and can't be used to create NFTs from any game content, whether that's skins, items or even mods.

The developers wrote that blockchain technology's concept of digital ownership is founded on "scarcity and exclusion" which "does not align with Minecraft values of inclusion in the creative process and playing together." They added that third-party NFTs could end costing players who purchase them, because they rely on people creating blockchain technology "who could disappear without notice."

This is exactly what was actually happening. A NFT project known as Blockverse, which was supposedly built to be a part of the Minecraft universe, scammed an estimated $1.2 million from early investors who purchased Blockverse characters in NFT form on websites like OpenSeas. The project also offered the cryptocurrency called $Diamond. In January, the creators suddenly took all the money invested and deleted the website, Discord, and Twitter account. If you're not aware this, it's known as a "rug pull," and it's much too common in the crypto industry.

The Minecraft devs did leave it open to possible blockchain technology being added in the near future however, they added "we do not have plans of implementing blockchain technology into Minecraft as of now."

It is likely that initiatives that were trying to integrate Minecraft into the blockchain were not enthused by the news. NFT Worlds, a company that uses blockchain to allow users to purchase NFTs from a Minecraft-a popular digital environment, was severely impacted. The company posted a Discord message on its Twitter account that said they were working on solutions "around the Minecraft EULA changes," adding they were considering a change to their Minecraft-like game platform.

Despite the game being 13 years old, 141 million active players still come back to Minecraft every month, according to of August 2021 data from Statista. Minecraft Server List In a 2019 interview Helen Chiang, head of Minecraft studio, stated that Minecraft players were averagely aged 24. Chiang said that the game was specifically designed to be child-friendly. The ERSB rating for Minecraft players is 10 years old or up. A money-making investment strategy built into the client does raise a lot of concerns and could lead to abuse, particularly when you expose children to. Chiang has reportedly stated to Edge that "We should be very clear and simple around how we plan to monetize in the game."

While other games that are geared toward kids like Roblox have all-in on monetization and promotions in-game targeted at children. Roblux is used to incentivize gamers to spend Roblux in-game for items, while they play in worlds specifically designed to promote brands like Ralph Lauren, Nike, and Vans. The game's creators revised their community standards in the past year to include an unambiguous reference to NFTs in game. Users, they said, are not permitted to use Roblox to offer payment to act as an asset model.
