It Is The History Of Railroad Settlement Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia In 10 Milestones
Railroad Settlement and Esophageal Cancer

Railroad workers are often exposed to cancer-causing chemicals at their work environments. Some workers develop lung cancer, mesothelioma and other diseases from their exposures.

In a case filed in the United States District Court, Northern District of Alabama, our attorneys were able to secure the summary judgment of a large railroad carrier. Plaintiff claimed that his cancer was caused by exposures to diesel exhaust, creosote and asbestos.

Risk Factors

Different factors can determine the type of cancer that develops in the esophagus. Some of these risk factors are able to be altered while others, like age and family history cannot. The most commonly encountered type of esophageal cancer develops in the flat cells that make up most of the lining the esophagus, called squamous cells. The cancer is more prevalent in black and males, but the trend is decreasing worldwide.

The esophagus also houses glandular cells that secrete mucus that aids in the passage of food into the stomach. The cells are located close to the stomach in the lower region of the esophagus. Adenocarcinomas is the most common type of esophageal tumours that can be found in these cells. They are more common in males and black individuals, but the trend is declining in the United States.

The risk of esophageal carcinoma increases when a person smokes cigarettes and drinks alcohol. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma settlement for a long period increases the risk of developing squamous cancer. This includes tea brewed in Northern China and Brandie whisky in the US and Europe. Beer is also associated with the disease in Southern Africa and Latin America.

Railroad workers are frequently exposed to toxins which increase the chance of developing esophageal cancer. These include solvents used in cleaning equipment and herbicides applied along rail tracks to deter the growth of weeds and lead paint on railway bridges and facilities such as exhaust fumes from diesel engines, and silica from industrial materials. This type of cancer could be caused by the toxic chemical creosote, which is used to treat railroad tie.

Diagnosis

A timely diagnosis can improve the odds of surviving. The earlier the cancer is identified, the more likely it will be to be treated. The first signs are difficulty swallowing, a loss of appetite and weight loss, coughing or hoarseness in the chest, chest pain, and an impression that food particles are stuck in the throat (dysphagia).

Imaging tests can be utilized by a physician to identify the presence of esophageal cancer. This could include an upper gastrointestinal test using a barium swallow. This test involves swallowing a harmless chalky liquid to cover the surface of the esophagus. This makes it visible on X-rays. The doctor may also request blood tests to determine if there is anemia and to see how the liver's function is.

Railroad workers who are diagnosed with esophageal cancer could be entitled to compensation from the railroad companies that exposed them substances in the workplace. A qualified railroad esophageal cancer attorney could review the case of a person and discuss their rights to claim financial compensation under the Federal Employers Liability Act.

An experienced FELA lawyer can begin assembling evidence to show that the railroad worker's esophageal carcinoma was caused by their exposure to diesel exhaust fumes, asbestos and other chemicals. A lawyer can also assist determine the appropriate compensation for the economic and other damages.

Treatment

Railroad workers are exposed many dangerous substances, including asbestos, diesel exhaust, and creosote. These substances can cause esophageal cancer by damaging the lining of your throat. Railroad workers are at greater risk of developing illnesses such as mesothelioma and lung cancer.

The esophagus, also known as the esophagus, is muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. It carries liquids and food that is swallowed to the digestive tract. Esophageal cancer occurs in the cells that form the lining of the esophagus, or mucosa.

There are a variety of treatment options available for patients suffering from esophageal cancer. Surgery is usually paired with chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.

Doctors may opt for either endoscopic submucosal disection (ESD) or endoscopic mucosal removal (EMR) for cancers of stage I. Both procedures are minimally invasive, and don't require the removal of the esophagus. When they are performed, doctors use an endoscope to remove precancerous tissues and testing for symptoms of cancer.

For stage II cancers, doctors can choose to use chemo or an combination of chemo with radiation. Chemotherapy drugs kill cancer cells. Radiation works on the same principle but utilizes X-rays of high-energy to destroy cancerous cells in the esophagus, and other tissues around it. In certain instances, a patient may receive chemotherapy without radiation if the tumor is in the upper part of the esophagus in the vicinity of the stomach.

Prognosis

People who have esophageal carcinoma that is not spreading are generally considered to be healthy. This is particularly true if the cancer is detected in its early stages and treated promptly.

However, the prognosis of a patient is contingent on the type of cancer they have and the stage of cancer at the time they are diagnosed. For example, a person with squamous cell cancer that has not metastasized is believed to have a better survival rate than a person with adenocarcinoma, which has not developed.

In some cases, the doctor may be able to remove the tumor completely by performing surgery. This is referred to as resection. This is especially common in squamous-cell carcinomas and Adenocarcinomas which have not spread.

Federal Employers Liability Act may provide financial compensation to railroad workers who are diagnosed with cancer or any other chronic illness that are related to their work. If you suspect that your condition is caused by exposure at work, you should contact an expert railroad settlement lawyer as soon as you can. Under FELA it is possible to file a claim within three years to make a claim. However, if you did not realize that your illness or cancer was connected to your job at the time of diagnosis, the time of limitations could be extended. A lawyer who is knowledgeable about FELA cases could review your case and determine if you should accept a settlement offer.
