Disney's Moana Costume Is a Dream Come True
Disney's Moana, a Polynesian princess, has inspired millions of young girls and boys to pursue adventure. She is a Polynesian girl who sets out on a journey in order to save her town from destruction. Maui, the demigod, helps her in her quest when she sets off on her voyage.

Moana, the slender and strong girl, has black hair which is tied into a bun at times while she's sailing. She's also a talented, adventurous sailor.

Her Tuiga (headdress) is made from shells of the ocean, and has red feathers for royalty. Her ceremonial outfit was designed by a Polynesian expert and is based on the Taualuga ceremonies in Samoa.

The design team behind Moana paid close attention to the Polynesian culture and materials available in the Pacific Islands 2,000-years ago, when the film took place. They also respected the traditional body making techniques of the Pacific Islands people. The Oceanic Story Trust (a non-profit organisation that provides feedback to films based upon Polynesian histories) worked with Moana's design team to ensure all outfits used in this movie were authentic.

Moana’s costume was challenging to design because there are no photographs of Polynesian outfits from 2,000 years back that can be used for inspiration. The team also worked with a Samoan sewist to ensure their designs were accurate.

The rash guard is inspired by Moana's loyal friends Pua and Hei Hei. cat in the hat costume will be protected from harmful UV rays. This rashguard also has an SPF 50+ built in and is made from soft, comfortable cotton.

Disney says that the costume features "the demigod’s trademark tattoos, rope neck and island-style skit" as well as padded legs and arms for mighty height!" There was also a matching wig for sale.

Critics likened this costume to "blackface" and claimed that it was disrespectful towards Polynesian cultures and people. Chelsie Haunani, a Hawaiian and "advocate of Pacific people", was one critic who disliked it.

Many people claim that the skin color and tattoos on the costume are too similar to blackface. They also say that the design is not realistic, especially since it's based on an animated version. She also said she was angry that the costume had been put on sale in time for Halloween. It was not appropriate to sell a costume which made people appear tattooed.
