The History of Hayes Place

Hayes Place's history is complex and long. It all begins with Robert Hall building a new double house opposite Hayes Church around 1600 on the Asshleys site. It would go through a variety of changes throughout the years, including becoming a home for Sir Stephen Scott.

Hayes Place is a large mansion situated at the top of a hill in Redlands. It's a popular area for commuters however, it's also a good area to live in.

It was initially constructed as a private residence of Mary Folsom Hayes Chynoweth, who claimed to be a healer of faith. The iron-rich Wisconsin mining fortune enabled her and her children to afford the massive mansion.

After her death, the property was sold to a man who was a banker named Everard Hambro in 1880. To remodel the house, Hambro hired George Devey, an architect.

The west side of the house was transformed with the addition of a new entrance hall, dining room and terrace. He also replaced the front doors and windows and put in an electric lighting system.

The house was built on two connected wings of stock and brick and stone in 1912. It featured a porch and an enormous central hallway that was separated by narrow hall.

When the house was enlarged in 1926, it became the main administrative building of the University of Buffalo, now named Hayes Hall. Its distinctive clock tower and Westminster chimes remain an iconic landmark on South Campus.

Today, the family that is the owner of the mansion is deeply concerned about its past and the legacy it has left to the community. They are planning to invest $43.5 million to make it a better place to live and are planning an official reopening ceremony in September.

In the meantime, there are many ways to tour the mansion. Visitors can purchase a pass for the site and visit the first and second floors, as well as visit the cupola.

He was there until the war and , when he returned to Hayes in 1928, this business was transferred to Ernest Sidney Poynter who lived in Hayes with his wife Elizabeth. Peter and Eileen Sheath took over the business, which they operated for many years before it was transferred to Simon and Sarah Butler.

One of the most unique aspects of the house is the walnut staircase that has 57 steps. It is made of black walnut, butternut and takes 45 feet to reach the fourth floor.

On the ground floor, there are many rooms that are accessible. These include the parlor, a bedroom and the library, which has 13-foot ceilings. In addition, a larger-than-life painting of Hayes by the artist William Carl Brown is located in the library.

Another distinctive feature is an assortment of 12 wooden cases lined with glass in which Hayes could display his most prized mementos. He called them his "Little Smithsonian."

There are additional bedrooms on the upper floors , as well as an attic which can be used for storage. Guided tours are not permitted to access the third or fourth floors.

23 Hayes Street

Also known as the Hayes door and window, 23 Hayes Street is one of the oldest structures in the village. It is a two-storey building which dates back to the 18th century. It was constructed as a baker's shop. It was a landmark in the village for more than 100 years. It was demolished in 2003 , and is now a residence.

Built in 1888, St Mary Cottages is a terrace of ten cottages which was designed by George Devey for Sir Everard Hambro. The terrace was given the status of a Grade II listing in 1994.

Cottages have a steeply pitched roof constructed of tiles and Queen struts for raking. Straight wind bracing is set on Jowel poles. They are weatherboarded with a square headed window to each bay with small panes.

The building is home to cottages, as well as a large garden and basement. The ground floor of the property is used as a meeting room, while the first floor is used by Mr and Mrs Clarke who purchased the property in 2004 and have restored it to a very high standard.

Another intriguing aspect of this historic building is the fact that it has a variety of chimney stacks dating from the early 1800s, which are particularly impressive. The roof is also covered in an extensive layer of lead.

It is believed that the house was initially a single cottage. It is possible that a second cottage was added to the original structure, but it is not clear if this was related.
