Configure Nginx to Gatsby page with 404 Error

When you visit the Gatsby page, you will be greeted with a screen similar to.



If you created a custom 404 page, for example , in src/pages/404.js, you can click the Preview custom page to display it. Entering the /404 route will do the job as well.

In production, however, the 404 page doesn't appear to be handled by itself, unless you use a dedicated hosting service specifically for Gatsby pages. The reason is that Gatsby's development servers is no more in use. The production bundle is simply a collection of static files. To serve the production page, you'll need to use an online server such as nginx.



Disclaimer: the following nginx configuration is pretty basic, don't use it in production.



Let's suppose that your blog is hosted on the personalblog.com domain and it is accessible via the directory /var/www/blog on port 80.



When you enter a route that doesn't exist in your production Gatsby site, nginx displays the default page with 404 errors.



In the event of a 404 error, nginx will redirect to the /404 route , by adding the error_page404/404; line. Your custom Gatsby page 404 will be displayed.
