We often fear what we don't understand. We fear what we have never experienced before. A common fear nearly all of us struggle with is the fear of death. No one ever comes back from the grave to tell us about their death experience so it remains a great mystery.

We depend on the State to protect us. The State provides police and fire protection, military protection, and protection against criminals. The courts were set up for this very purpose, to confine and punish those who harm others. When the crime is sufficiently brutal to justify the death penalty, and the evidence is sufficient to convict, then the State has the authority and the right to execute. Of course it does.

What Should I Say? To answer that question, consider what you were asked to do. Were you asked to deliver a short tribute to the deceased? Tributes usually involve speaking about what made the person who has died memorable. Ask the person planning the funeral how long they would like you to speak, and stay within those guidelines. It's appropriate to share favorite memories, but remember to keep what you're sharing appropriate for the entire audience.

While it is quite convenient to allow a funeral home handle all aspects of your funeral, you will find that the costs can be a little steep. Instead, see if you can get some of the important items from elsewhere at cheaper rates.

Being able to shop around. This may sound crass, but by pre-planning your funeral you can take some time to visit various funeral homes and find the place that suits you both financially as well in accommodations. Also, keep in mind that you do not have to purchase the casket and arrange the service at the same location.


Avoid bright colors; stay muted. If you don't own anything black, there's no need to panic. Many families will not be offended if you have to wear dark blue or gray. Even neutral tones are acceptable funeral etiquette. Just make certain to avoid any bright colors to the funeral. This takes attention away from the family and the deceased, which is disrespectful.

I don't know why this scared me so much. Maybe it was because I missed all of the wonderful memories of a quiet, kind, caring soul who was there to serve everyone's needs. Someone who made a mean apple pie, and someone who gave the most wonderful hugs.
