Should you Purchase Java Edition or Bedrock Edition?

There are two main versions of Minecraft, one of which is available only for computers, and the other version can be played on almost every device. Minecraft: Java Edition is the original game. It is perfect for installing mods and playing on huge multiplayer servers. In the meantime, Minecraft: Bedrock Edition is great if you are looking to play with other players on different systems.



When you get started with Minecraft you'll be confronted with a myriad of choices to make such as where to go and what to build, and what game mode to play in.

Minecraft: Java Edition vs Minecraft: Bedrock Edition




Java Edition is available to PC, Mac, and Linux


First, if you're planning to play Minecraft on any other device than a computer, then you'll be playing Bedrock. The Java version of Minecraft is only available to computers.



However, Bedrock isn't available on Mac or Linux. Java is the only way to play Bedrock on any of these systems.

Bedrock Edition lets you play with your friends on other consoles


Minecraft: Bedrock Edition is the best choice if you are looking to play Minecraft with other players. Cross-play is a feature of the Bedrock version that allows you to play with your friends even if you're on your PC and they are on a Nintendo Switch.



The Java version lets you only play with other Java users. Of course, that means that if all of your friends are playing Java this is the best one for you too.






Java Edition has massive multiplayer servers


Java has a large number of multiplayer servers however, it doesn't offer the same level in cross-play. These servers allow you to play with other Java users and also feature stunning maps with minigames and activities.



Both versions of the game run servers that are their own. Java servers have been around for since the beginning of time, so there are many cool maps to pick from.



If you're looking to play the mini-games that are popular on YouTube, like Bed Wars or Hunger Games opt for Java.






Bedrock Edition has most consistent performance


Although it may appear to be an easy game, Minecraft can be incredibly demanding on your computer's graphic card and CPU. Bedrock is a good option if you don't have a top-of-the-line computer.



The Java edition allows you to make modifications to enhance your graphics. However the Bedrock edition is more fluid and more reliable. This means less dropped frames and faster load times.






Java Edition has a nearly limitless number of mods


The main difference between Java and Bedrock is the ability to add mods, which are only available to Java players.



Mods are programs that can be added to Minecraft to make the game more interesting. There are two types of mods: basic mods to alter the music and graphics and advanced mods to add new items or alter how the world works.



Most importantly, the majority of these mods can be downloaded for free. You can install and alter them using the program Minecraft Forge.



While Bedrock offers a few modding tools available, you have to pay for them and there are just few, compared to the infinite possibilities of Java.






Java Edition allows you to play in Hardcore mode


Minecraft defaults to four game modes: Survival and Creative Adventure, as well as Spectator. Java users can play Hardcore which is a fifth game mode.



Hardcore mode is very popular with streamers. It grants you only one life. This means that your life is erased forever if you die.



If you're looking for a new challenge, Java is the way to go.






Should you buy Java Edition or Bedrock Edition?
