Dundee Pupils Redesign City Waterfront Using Minecraft

Dundee pupils redesign city waterfront using Minecraft

5 June 2015

Dundee school pupils have submitted their ideas for the future of the city's waterfront through the medium of Minecraft.

Primary pupils have spent several months using the popular video game to develop plans for the area, which is currently undergoing an PS1bn-related renewal.

The project was managed by Dundee City Council and the University of Dundee.

The plans were evaluated based by the appearance of the design, as well as the support for education, tourism and job creation.

In addition to the Minecraft Youth Camp involving primary 6 and 7 students from across the city students from nine secondary schools have taken place in the same Minecraft Youth Camp, funded by the university and TAYplan.

The pupils worked in groups with XBox and Playstation consoles that were equipped with the game, connected to whiteboards in classrooms reimagining and building their visions of the city's waterfront.

'Hugely enthusiastic'

Derek Robertson, Dundee University's school for education, said that the game was an "huge phenomenon" that was a great way to engage children.

He said: "We need to understand the digital environments that children use and how they in their learning.

"If we want to engage children in subjects like design and the environment , then games and apps like this can be a great tool.

"The children we have worked with over the past few months have been extremely enthusiastic and have created amazing work. Some of it could be an obstacle for city planners, but that is the wonder of Minecraft that they can make anything."

Mr Robertson was recently invited along with 49 other teachers from around the globe to participate in a Minecraft Educators Summit in Los Angeles to discuss ways in which Minecraft can be best utilized in both formal and informal learning.
