This is a Brand-new Project

On Kickstarter scientist and science communication expert Neil deGrasse Tyson has a crowdfunding campaign running with the aim of funding a unique type of computer game. The title is "Space Odyssey", and the team behind it is hoping to create a game that is both educational and enjoyable about physics, biology and space.

Players will learn what goes into vehicle and robot design as they create their own unique machine. They'll explore different worlds in an open-world "sandbox" setting. Some might even live life. One session might see the player piloting a vessel through the asteroid belt or creating a robot capable of mining comets for precious resources. The team plans to include virtual reality experiences as well, putting players in the middle of the action. Alongside Neil deGrasse Tyson are such prominent figures in science and communication as rocket scientist Loretta Falcone Cosmologist Janna Levin astrophysicist Charles Liu, planetary scientist Carolyn Porco, astronomer Amy Mainzer as well as former astronaut Mike Massimino and science communicator Bill Nye. He has also invited authors such as Neil Gaiman, Larry Niven, Peter Beagle and George R. R. Martin to join him on the creative world-building side. A host of other artists, writers and scientists, game designers and other notable people in the creative and scientific fields are contributing to the project.



Although this is a brand-new project, it's certainly not the first example of an educational computer game. From classics from the past like "Oregon Trail" to the modified versions of the popular game "Minecraft," game designers and educators have long recognized the power of teaching through games. Tyson's game, which's full title is "Neil deGrasse Tyson Presents Space Odyssey – The Video Game", is a bold and exciting game.



The Kickstarter campaign, with its goal of raising $314,159 (a seemingly insignificant amount until you consider the digits of pi) will close on the 29th of July, which is a Saturday. The project's administrators acknowledge that the funds will only be a small part of the Whatnot Entertainment's efforts to make "Space Odyssey" possible. If all goes well, you might soon be able go off to explore the world from the comfort of your couch.
