History. Scramble for Africa: The scramble for Africa was a time in which most major European nations had decided to expand there empire in the land of Africa. In more early stages of the conquest of Africa Nations like France, Spain and Germany competed against each other and later on England decide to join. Originally they would only take the coast of Africa as they did not have the medicine to cure the diseases that they would encounter in land one example of such diseases is malaria. One key person in England's control in Africa was Cecil Rhodes. Rhodes was an Englishman who had started gold and diamond mines in south Africa. Cecil Rhodes is considered a 'man on the spot'. A ,an on a spot was someone who helped further develop the British empire. Along with Cecil Rhodes there is another 'man on the spot' his name was David Livingstone. David Livingstone was a missionary who went to Africa to spread Christianity. Finally, Britain went to Africa to get involved in the 'scramble' the reason that Britain used for their involvement is that they wanted to carry on David Livingstone's message while in fact they just wanted to gain more power than they already had.
