Wild Card Wild Card: A Card or Cards that can be used as a Wild Card

The world of card games has its own distinctive language. Certain terms, like "deal", are well-known. Others are more obscure, such as "void." Here are definitions of a variety of terms used in card games:



Bid: A statement made in a spoken form to win a specific number of tricks or points; also, to make such a declaration.



Cutthroat Every player is playing on his or her own.



Deal Partitioning out the cards to the players and also the duration of play between one deal and the next.



Declaration: A declaration to fulfill a contract.



Deuce: A card with the rank of two; also known as two-spot.



Draw trumps: To play high trumps to reduce the opponent's hands of trumps.



Draw: To take a new card or cards.



Face card: A king or queen, or a jack.



Face value: The value of a card.



Flush: A set of cards of the same suit.



Follow the same procedure: to play a suit-leading card.



Foundation in solitaire, a starting card on which other specific cards are played.



Game: The total number of points you must reach; also what is considered winning or ending a particular game.



Going out: Playing, melding or putting away your last card.



Hand: The cards dealt to a player; also the duration of play in the game between the first deal and the next.



Kitty: A typical chip pool; also (in a few games) cards that can be exchanged.



Lay off to play one or more cards according to allowable plays.



Lead to play the first card to a trick.



Maker: A person who is bound by an obligation of a certain kind, for instance that they'll take a certain amount of points or tricks. Sometimes, they also have the option of choosing their choice of trump suit.



Marriage: A union made up of the king or queen.



Match Equal: To be equal through having the same rank (or another criteria).



Meld: A set of cards with scoring value, generally three or more cards in one suit or all of the same rank; additionally to play or show the combination.



No-trump: The term used to describe the condition in which no suit is trumped in the game of trick-taking.



Pass: A verbal declaration not to make a bid or offer. In Hearts three cards that are hidden swapped between the players.



Plain card: Any 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, or ace.



Pot A stack of counters or chips to be taken home by the winner.



Reserve: A collection of cards that can be used in solitaire.



Sequence: Two or more cards in consecutive order.



Singleton: One card in a suit.



Stock: The cards are available for future use.



Table: The playing space and also to lay down a meld on the playing area.



Tableau: In solitaire, the arrangement of the cards on the playing surface, but not including the foundations.



Talon: A portion of your pack that you can use later during the deal.



Trey: A card of the rank of three, also called a three-spot.



Trick The trick is a round of cards played by each player, one from their hand.

Upcard: The card that came up following the deal, typically to begin play or initiate a discard pile.



Void: An absence of a suit in a player’s hand.



Wild card: A deck of cards, set prior to the game's beginning, that can be designated by the holder to be a substitute for any other card.
