Gratian the Elder was a powerful man who rose through the ranks during the reign of Constantine the Great (306 - 337). He had two sons that would become emperor, both Valentinian I (364 - 375) and Valens (364 - 378). Upon accession to the throne, Valentinian I appointed Valens, his younger brother, to be co-emperor alongside him, taking the eastern empire. Like his father, Gratian the Elder, Valentinian I would also have two sons that would become emperor. Close to the beginning of his reign in 367, he appointed his son Gratian to become emperor of various western provinces. Upon his own death in 375, Valentinian II, his other son, succeeded him and ruled from 375-392. Upon the death of Valens at the disastrous Battle of Adrianople in 378, the empire was taken by Theodosius I (379 - 395). Although not a relative of Valentinian I, he was married to one of his daughters, Galla.
