Vaping Facts You Need to Know
You may be tempted to try vaping with electronic devices (e-cigarettes, vape pen, and other disposable as well as disposable electronic cigarettes) to help you transition from traditional cigarettes to never smoking. But is smoking e-cigarettes (also called vaping) better than smoking tobacco? Will e-cigarettes aid you to cut down on smoking once and all? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease is a health expert who shares his knowledge about vaping.

1 Vaping is not as harmful than smoking, but it's still not a safe option.

E-cigarettes warm nicotine (extracted from tobacco) along with flavorings and other chemicals to make an aerosol that you inhale. Regular cigarettes are made up of 7000 chemicals, some of which are poisonous. Although we don't know for certain what chemicals are in e-cigarettes, Blaha says "There's almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes."

There have been reports of lung-related injuries and deaths vaping. In February 2020 officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) verified 28007 cases of ecigarettes or vaping-related lung injury (EVALI) and more than 68 deaths due to this condition.

"These instances seem to concern people who alter their vaping equipment or use vape liquids from the black market that are modified. This is especially true of vape products that contain THC," explains Blaha.

The CDC has identified vitamin E Acetate as a substance of concern among people with EVALI. Vitamin E acetate is a common thickening agent used in THC vaping products, and it was discovered in all samples of lung fluid of EVALI patients examined and analyzed by CDC.

The CDC recommends that individuals:

Do not consume e-cigarettes which contain THC and vaping devices.

Avoid using informal sources for example, relatives, friends or online stores to purchase a vaping device.

Do not modify or add substances to your vape device that aren't the intended use of the manufacturer.

Research conducted by The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients published in October 2021 provides a wealth of chemical components in vape brands many of which have not been identified yet. Some of the ones they could determine were potentially harmful substances, such as caffeine, three chemicals that have never been previously identified in e-cigarettes as well as a pesticide, and two flavorings thought to have irritating respiratory effects and toxic effects.

2: Research suggests smoking cigarettes is bad for your heart and lungs.

Nicotine is the main ingredient in regular cigarettes and e cigarettes, and it is highly addictive. It can cause you to want an cigarette and then suffer withdrawal symptoms if not addressing the urge. Nicotine is an extremely toxic drug. It raises your blood pressure and spikes your adrenaline, which boosts the rate of your heart and increases the possibility of having a heart attack.

Does vaping harm you? There's plenty of questions surrounding smoking e-cigarettes, including what chemicals make up the vapor and how they impact physical health over the long haul. "People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health," says Blaha. "Emerging research suggests connections to chronic lung disease and asthma, and links between dual use of electronic cigarettes and smoking cigarettes with cardiovascular disease. You're exposed in all kinds of chemical that we're not fully understanding and that are probably not safe."

Electronic cigarettes are similar to traditional ones.

Both cigarettes, e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes contain nicotine. Research suggests it that they are as addictive as cocaine and heroin. Even more, says Blaha the majority of users of e-cigarettes get even more nicotine than the combustible tobacco product. You can purchase extra-strong cartridges, which are higher in nicotine, or increase the voltage of an e-cigarette to get an even higher dose of the substance.

Electronic cigarettes aren't exactly the best methods for quitting.

Although they've been touted for their ability to aid to quit smoking, electronic cigarettes don't have Food and Drug Administration approval for smoking cessation devices. A recent study has found that a majority of people who planned to switch to e-cigarettes for the purpose of kicking the habit ended up continuing to use traditional and e-cigarettes.

Based on the EVALI outbreak in light of the outbreak of EVALI, the CDC cautions people who use electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation to take a look at the risks and the benefits prior to deciding on alternative options that are FDA-approved for smoking cessation.

5 A new generation of people is hooked on nicotine.

With young people, e-cigarettes especially disposable ones, enjoy greater popularity among young people than other tobacco-based product. The 2021 National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million U.S. middle and high school students reported using electronic cigarettes in 2021. This includes more than 8 out of 10 teenagers using flavor-infused e-cigarettes.

According to Blaha there are three reasons why electronic cigarettes could be particularly enticing to young people. Many teens believe that vaping is less harmful than smoking. The second reason is that e-cigarettes have a lower cost per-use than traditional cigarettes. Furthermore, young people and adults like the fact that there is no smoke attractive. Since they don't smell, e-cigarettes lower some of the stigma of smoking.

"What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would've never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit," says Blaha. "It's it's one thing to change from smoking cigarettes to vaping. It's something else to start your nicotine addiction with vaping. Once you're hooked, nicotine can result in the need for traditional tobacco products in the future."

Research from the CDC shows that vaping among teens has decreased slightly since the year 2020. Kids being stuck at home under the supervision of their parents throughout the COVID-19 virus could contribute to that trend.

People in their teens change their tastes frequently, and, if you ask them, might not consider the use of disposable products, such as "puff bars" as vaping. The same CDC report says disposable e-cigarette use has increased by 1,000 percent among high school students and 400 percent among middle school students since 2019.

Vaping and the COVID-19 Pandemic

The coronavirus outbreak first occurred, Blaha notes, data indicate that the sales of electronic cigarettes dropped in part due to people spending more time in their homes and avoiding shops and public areas.

However, Blaha sees a trend that worries him: increasing rates of daily use of electronic cigarettes among everybody vape smokers. "The quantity of users that vape daily was previously one in 5but it's now up quite a bit, which is troubling because it implies more nicotine addiction. I'm keeping an to watch that."

What Is Vaping? Everything You Need To Know

How Does Vape Work?

Vaping devices vary in form, size, and colors. They produce an aerosol when they heat up a liquid, which may include flavors and other chemicals that make vaping appear less harsh (initially at least) that smoking. The liquid is able to deliver nicotine, marijuana, or some other substance to the user through the mouthpiece, which is breathed into the lungs , and then removed through the mouth or nose.

Vaping Health and Safety Risks

Many of these items typically have a liquid comprising just one-third-to-half of the nicotine present in cigarettes for example, one JUULpod at 5% strength is made to replace a whole pack of cigarettes with nicotine strength--vaping users still face the risk of health and safety.

Nicotine is a stimulant that can cause harm to the developing brain (which continues to expand until about 25 years of age) is present in numerous electronic cigarettes, though they are not always identified on the packaging as per a recent CDC study.

The consumption of nicotine in developing adolescent brains can harm parts that regulate:

Learning

Mood

Attention

Controlling impulses

Nicotine use affects how the synapses--connections between brain cells--are formed. A regular use of nicotine in adolescence could also increase the risk for subsequent addiction to cigarettes as well as other substances.

Other than nicotine vaping liquid, the liquid that vapes and then the Vapor may also contain harmful compounds, including

Cancer-causing chemicals

Metals that are heavy, like lead, nickel, and tin

Flavorings like diacetyl, one of the chemicals linked to lung disease

Volatile organic compounds

Ultra-fine particles are those that can be breathed deep into the lungs.

Scientists are still in the process of investigating the impact of vaping. This is especially the case with Vitamin E Acetate, the chemical in some vape liquids to help dilute. There were more than 2500 cases of users receiving treatment for vaping-related injuries in the week of December 17 the 17th of December, 2019. Vaping has also been responsible for 54 deaths across 27 states as well as even the District of Columbia.

Who is Vaping?

According to 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) information, 3.6 million children in middle school and high school smoke electronic cigarettes. It is defined as at least one time per every day in the last thirty days, has grown by to 78 percent, from 11.7 to 20.8 percent in 2018.

The growth of e-cigarettes by middle and high school students has resulted in an increase in overall tobacco use by 38 percent for high school students, and 29 percent for middle high schoolers.

E-cigarette use isn't restricted to adolescents. Nine percent of U.S. adults say they "regularly or occasionally" vape.

Electronic cigarettes could assist adult smokers who and are not expecting when used as completely substitutes for regular cigarettes as well as other tobacco products.

E-cigarettes pose a risk to youngsters, young adults and pregnant women, and adults who currently do not make use of tobacco products.

Even though e-cigarettes are able to be beneficial for some and make others sick, scientists have much to learn about whether they are effective to quit smoking.

If you've never smoked or have you ever used other tobacco products or electronic cigarettes, you shouldn't begin.

Further research is needed to better understand the long-term effects on health.
