Vaping Facts You Need to Know
There are many reasons to turn to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes, vape pen, as well as other disposable and disposable vaping devices) in order to simplify the transition from smoking cigarettes in the traditional way to not smoking at all. But is using e-cigarettes (also called vaping) more beneficial than smoking tobacco? Are they able to help you cut down on smoking once and all? Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H., director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease offers health information about vaping.

1 Vaping is not as harmful as smoking cigarettes, but it's no guarantee of safety.

E-cigarettes warm nicotine (extracted from tobacco) along with flavorings and other chemicals to create an aerosol which you inhale. Regular cigarettes are made up of 7000 chemicals, many of which are harmful. While we're not sure what chemicals are found in e-cigarettes, Blaha says "There's almost no doubt that vaping exposes you to fewer toxic chemicals than smoking traditional cigarettes."

There have been reports of lung injuries and deaths linked vaping. In February of 2020 there was a report from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) verified 28007 cases related to e-cigarettes as well as vaping-related Lung injury (EVALI) and nearly 68 deaths were linked to the disease.

"These cases are believed to involve people who have modified the vaping devices they use or counterfeit e-liquids. This is especially true of vaping products that contain THC," explains Blaha.

The CDC has identified vitamin E Acylone as a possible chemical of concern in people suffering from EVALI. Vitamin E Acetate is a thickening ingredient that is frequently employed in THC vape products. it was found in the lung fluid samples that EVALI patients were examined by the CDC.

The CDC suggests that people:

Don't smoke THC-containing e cigarette such as vaping cigarettes.

Be wary of using unofficial sources such as friends, family or online dealers to obtain a vaping device.

Do not modify or add any substances in a vaping device which are not intended by the manufacturer.

The study by The Johns Hopkins University on vape ingredients published in October 2021 shows thousands of chemical components found in vape devices most of which aren't identified yet. In the list of ingredients the team was able identify were a variety of potentially harmful substances, including caffeine. three chemicals previously not found in electronic cigarettes including pesticides and two flavorings linked with possible exposure to respiratory irritation and toxic effects.

2. Research suggests vaping can be detrimental to your heart and lungs.

Nicotine is the principal ingredient in traditional tobacco and ecigarettes, and it's extremely addictive. It causes you to desire an cigarette and then suffer withdrawal symptoms if one does not take care to ignore the desire. Nicotine can be a dangerous substance. It increases your blood pressure and increases your adrenaline levels, which can increase your heart rate as well as the probability of having a heart attack.

Is vaping bad for you? There's a myriad of questions regarding vaping, such as what chemicals comprise the vapor as well as how they impact physical well-being over the long-term. "People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health," claims Blaha. "Emerging research suggests links to lung diseases and chronic asthma, as well as evidence linking dual use of e-cigarettes and smoking with cardiovascular disease. You're exposing yourself to a myriad of chemicals that aren't understood yet and may not be healthy."

Electronic cigarettes can be just as addictive as traditional cigarettes.

The e-cigarettes and the regular cigarettes contain nicotine. Studies suggest that they might be just as addictive as cocaine and heroin. Even more, says Blaha the majority of users of e-cigarettes take in more nicotine than they would in a combustible tobacco product. Customers can buy additional strength cartridges that have a higher concentration of nicotine, or raise its voltage in order to get more nicotine substance.

Electronic cigarettes aren't the most effective smoking tools for quitting.

Though vape uae 've been advertised as a method to help to quit smoking, electronic cigarettes aren't yet granted Food and Drug Administration approval for smoking cessation devices. A recent study showed that the majority of those who intended to try e-cigarettes in order to get rid of the nicotine habit ended still using traditional and e-cigarettes.

Amid the EVALI outbreak in light of the outbreak of EVALI, the CDC urges users of electronic cigarettes for smoking cessation to be aware of the risks and benefits and to first think about using alternative options that are FDA-approved for smoking cessation.

5: A new generation is addicted to nicotine.

At the age of 15, e-cigarettes especially the disposable type, tend to be more beloved than traditional tobacco product. From the National Youth Tobacco Survey, more than 2 million U.S. middle and high schoolers reported using e-cigarettes in 2021, with more than 8 in 10 of those youngsters using flavored electronic cigarettes.

According to Blaha the three reasons e-cigarettes may be attractive to teenagers. A first reason is that a lot of teens believe vaping isn't as harmful as smoking. The second reason is that e-cigarettes have a cheaper cost per use than traditional cigarettes. Finally, youths and adults like the fact that there is no smoke appealing. They are also odorless, which helps reduce some of the stigmas associated with smoking cigarettes.

"What I find most concerning about the rise of vaping is that people who would've never smoked otherwise, especially youth, are taking up the habit," Blaha adds. Blaha. "It's quite one thing to move from smoking cigarettes into vaping. It's an entirely different thing to start your nicotine addiction with vaping. And, getting hooked on nicotine is often the reason for using traditional tobacco products later on."

Research conducted by the CDC indicates that the use of vapes among teens has declined slightly since the year 2020. Children staying at home under their parents' supervision as they battle COVID-19 could contribute to that trend.

Young people alter their preferences often, and when taken into consideration, they might not want to consider using disposable products like "puff bars" as vaping. The same CDC report states that disposable e-cigarette use has grown by 1,000 percent among high schoolers and 400 percent among middle school students in the year 2019.

Vaping and the COVID-19 Pandemic

At the time the coronavirus pandemic beganto spread, Blaha says, data show that sales of e-cigarettes decreased probably due to people spending more time at home and away from stores and public places.

But Blaha is aware of a trend that raises concerns: the rise of daily e-cigarette use among most vape consumers. "The number of users who vape regularly used to be 1 in 5, but the number is now up quite a bit, which is troubling because it means more nicotine addiction. I'm keeping a close to watch that."

What Is Vaping? Everything You Need To Know

How Does Vape Work?

Vaping apparatuses vary in appearance, size, and the color. They produce an aerosol from heating up a liquid that could contain flavors and other chemicals that makes vaping less savage (initially at least) in comparison to smoking. This liquid delivers nicotine, marijuana, or any other drug to the user through the mouthpiece. This is then breathed into the lungs . It is then eliminated through the mouth or nose.

Vaping Health and Safety Risks

Though many of these brands generally have a liquid that is around one-third of the nicotine that is found in cigarettes -- for instance, one JUULpod containing 5% strength is created to replace an entire pack of cigarettes in nicotine strength--vaping users still face various health and safety issues.

Nicotine is a stimulant that can damage the developing adolescent brain (which grows until around 25 years of age) is present in a number of e-cigarettes, however it is not always listed on the label in a recent CDC study.

The use of nicotine by adolescents in their developing brains could damage parts that control:

Learning

Mood

Attention

Impulse control

Nicotine use affects how the synapses--connections between brain cells--are formed. Regular usage in adolescence can cause the development of addiction to cigarettes and other drugs.

In addition to nicotine vaping liquid, vaping and later vapor could also contain harmful substances , including:

Cancer-causing chemicals

Metals of heavy use, including lead, nickel, and tin

Flavorings including diacetyl one chemical that is associated with lung disease

Volatile organic compounds

Ultra-fine particles that are breathed deep into the lungs.

Scientists are still actively learning about the effects that vaping can have, particularly in relation to Vitamin E Acetate, which is substance that is found in many vape liquids to help dilute. There were more then 2,500 patients receiving treatment for vaping related injuries on the 17th of November January, 2019. Vaping has also resulted in 54 deaths across 27 states and The District of Columbia.

Who is Vaping?

According to the 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) data, 3.6 million children in middle school and high schools are using electronic cigarettes. In the definition of using at least once a day for the last thirty days, has grown by nearly 78 per cent from 11.7 to 20.8 percent in 2018.

The increasing use of electronic cigarettes by middle and high school students has led to an increase in tobacco use of 38 percent for high schoolers and 29 percent for middle schoolers.

E-cigarette use isn't limited to adolescents. Nine percent of U.S. adults say they "regularly or occasionally" vape.

E-cigarettes may benefit smokers of adulthood who are not expecting, when used as an all-in-one replacement for regular cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Electronic cigarettes are not recommended for youth, young adults, pregnancies, and people who don't currently use tobacco products.

Although e-cigarettes could be able benefits to some but hurt others, scientists have a lot to learn about whether e-cigarettes work for quitting smoking.

If you've never otherwise used tobacco products other than e-cigarettes, avoid starting.

Additional research will help to understand the long-term effects on health.
