Kazakhstan Unrest Will not be Eased by Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov's Re-election as Deputy Chief Of Staff
Following a string of protests that rocked Kazakhstan the government of Kazakhstan has to face a fresh reality.
Erzhan Kasykhanov's return could be a sign of the shifting power dynamics.
The international community has to evolve to accommodate a more assertive citizenry. Politymakers must also be able to recognize these developments and devise effective methods of engaging with the country.
The role of Ukraine in Kazakhstan's Shift
Over the last few weeks, all attention has been focused on Ukraine in the last few weeks, as Russian President Vladimir Putin prepared for and declared a full-scale war against the sovereign nation. This was not surprising considering how NATO leaders including Biden, President of NATO, Biden ignored warnings from Moscow. Russian President Putin repeatedly condemned NATO's plans to invading Russian territory.
Although https://econotimes.com/Why-should-Erzhan-Kazykhanovs-policy-concern-the-US-1629870 have been widely criticized however, the leaders of the west have to acknowledge that they are the ones responsible for causing the crisis. It is reasonable to conclude that we are now suffering the effects of the European crisis that could have been avoided.
Protests in Kazakhstan
The situation in Ukraine should be compared to the experiences of recent years in the area. The color revolutions that took place between 2003 and 2005, and the unrest that occurred in Belarus and Kazakhstan. It is an ex Soviet country in central Asia and seldom sees protests on the streets so openly expressing anger.
https://beforeitsnews.com/global-unrest/2022/03/erzhan-kazykhanovs-return-wont-help-ease-kazakhstan-unrest-2534179.html started in Kazakhstan earlier this year, in protest at the rising cost of gas. These protests turned into violent riots and caused nationwide rallies. Almaty was the worst hit by the violence, with 227 people killed and over 9900 people being detained. Russian troops from the Collective Security Treaty Organization CSTO were briefly stationed in Almaty.
Restructuring Kazakhstan's Government, Erzhan Kazykhanov Return
Qasym Zhomart tokayev, Kazakhstan's new president, has brought many changes to the power structure of the ruling elite. This has raised questions and concerns among many Kazakhs.
Particularly, protesters have been outraged by the decision of President Tokayev to assume the office of the head of the government's National Security Council, replacing former President Nursultan Nazarbayev whose influence over the economy of the country was an issue of concern for protesters.
These events led to three sons in law of the former president getting removed from their positions and dismissed from state enterprises. Karim Masimov, the former head of the spy agency was detained on charges of treason. These officials were not the only ones to lose their jobs. A lot of members of the business elite who was closely associated with President Nazarbayev fled to other countries for long holidays or received large "donations."
Reform doesn't always result through government reforms and the elimination or retention of former guards. It is not uncommon for those who served in the previous administration to be replaced with equally ineffective relatives and loyalists.
Erzhan Kykhanov's Application an Open
Erzhan Kazykhanov's appointment as the President's highly influential position of the Deputy Chief of Staff counter productive. Kazakhstan's ambassador to the United States was Kazakh Kazykhanov.
Kazykhanov gained a reputation within Washington as an insular and arrogant diplomat, who was overly self-confident and often out of touch with the delicate nature of Kazakhstan's image abroad. Kazykhanov was unable to make improvements in national interests like the Jackson Vanick restrictions as well as other issues relating to Kazakhstan's reputation abroad. This is the reason his performance is so disappointing.
Due to his unworthy reputation and a shady background, Kazykhanov is unlikely to be a candidate for important post. Kazykhanov's skills as a Deputy Chief of Staff is restricted to diplomacy and broad knowledge, and competence.
Many of Kazakhstan's staunchest supporters have expressed their concern over Kazykhanov's frequent appearances, often in major news outlets around the world which expose his weaknesses. Tokayev's choice to introduce an self-promoting, incompetent and volatile deputy into an unstable government at such an important time is not making sense.
Tokayev's Kazakhstan reforms are reminiscent of Mikhail Gorbachev's Perestroika in the Soviet Union and Glasnost. Perestroika is often referred to as the mid-1980s' program of Mikhail Gorbachev to improve Soviet economics and politics and Glasnost was a reference to his policy reform. The Soviet Union fell largely because of these reforms, which is precisely what Putin is seeking to bring back. Tokeyev developed strong economic relations between the West and the countries that surround his country. However, he has not tried to defy Putin. This delicate balance could be upset by Kazykhanov.
When Times are Unsteady and the US should pay particular attention to Kazakhstan
During the war in Ukraine, Washington should be paying attention to the developments in Kazakhstan because they are a glimpse of how a succession of power will unfold in this region of the world , either way.
It's a pity that Russian forces invaded Ukraine. The United States and its allies should take the necessary steps to stop the aggression of Putin. We must not forget that NATO has been pushing Russia for years, and that this situation is in part a consequence of their incompetence.
Washington must pay attention to Kazakhstan which may prove crucial in the war between Russia (West) and Russia (Russia).
