Cumhuriyet dönemi şairi Özdemir Asaf, 11 Haziran 1923 tarihinde Ankara'da doğdu. Asıl adı Halit Özdemir Arun'dur. şair, 7 yaşındayken babasını kaybetti. Asaf ile ailesi, babasının vefatından sonra İstanbul'a taşındı ve annesi Acıbadem'deki köşkünde biçki dikiş kursu açmasıyla geçimlerini sağladı. Özdemir Asaf, Galatasaray Lisesi'nin ilkokulunda başladığı eğitimine, 11. sınıftayken ek sınavla Kabataş Erkek Lisesi'nde devam etti ve mezun oldu.

İstanbul Üniversitesi Hukuk Fakültesi 3. sınıfa kadar İktisat Fakültesi ve 1 yıl da Gazetecilik Enstitüsü'nde eğitim gören Asaf, okulda tanıştığı Sabahat Selma ile evlendi. İlk eşi Sabahattan bir kızı olan Asaf'ın, Türkiye'nin ilk kadın fotoğraf sanatçısı ikinci eşi Yıldız Moran'dan ise üç oğlu oldu

gazeteler de çevirmen olarak çalışan Asaf'ın ilk şiiri, 1939'da Servet-i Fünun-Uyanış dergisinde yayımlandı.

Özdemir Asaf,Sanat basımevi ve, Yuvarlak Masa Yayınlarını kurdu. İlk şiir kitabı Dünya Kaçtı Gözüme'yi taşlama ve ironi unsurlarını da kullandığı eserlerini dörtlük ve ikilik şeklinde yazdı. Eserlerinde daha çok insan ve toplum ilişkilerine yönelik konuları işleyen şair, şiirlerinde ise alay ve taşlama ögelerine yer verdi.

Yuvarlak Masa Yayınlarını ve matbaasını kapatan ve rahatsızlığı nedeniyle Hastanede tedavi görmeye başlayan şaire, akciğer kanseri teşhisi konuldu. 58 yaşında öldü
