Today's Topic - The Cell Nucleus
What is a Cell Nucleus? -
A cell nucleus is an organelle found in eukaryotic cells. It contains a cell's genetic material, or DNA. DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid are long molecules with a large variety of proteins to form chromosomes. The genes within these chromosomes are the cell's nuclear genome. Essentially, the nucleus is the control center of the cell.
What is the nucleus used for? -
The nucleus is the site of genetic transcription, a process of copying DNA. It is used also for the replication of DNA in the Cell Cycle. Without it, copying DNA would result in misformed and nonfunctional proteins.
Different Cells With and Without Nuclei -
Most cells usually have a single nuclei, however, some have many and some have none. This can be because of normal processes, or because of faulty cell division. One of the most well known is the mammalian red blood cell, which loses its nucleus and other organelles as it matures in the bone marrow.
Some species of protozoa have multiple nuclei, and so do the parasites in the genus Giardia. In humans, skeletal muscle cells become multinucleated during development.
