Loose Toilet Handle Fix
You may find it annoying if the handle on your toilet is loose. Even worse is not flushing at all with a toilet handle.

In most cases, a loose toilet handle is a simple issue that can be easily fixed. You can either tighten or replace a broken toilet handle by following these instructions.

Fix a Loose Toilet Handle
The toilet seat cover should be closed.
Don't let parts or tools fall in.

Get rid of the toilet tank cover.
Make sure you hold it with two hands, especially if it is heavy, and it is set on a flat surface that will not crack or fall.

Stop the water flow to your toilet.
Normally, the shut-off valve is located near the base, towards the back of your toilet.

If the tank is full, press the lever to empty it.
By doing so, you can easily reach the inside of the handle.

This is located on the porcelain wall to the left of the handle. You probably have a loose toilet handle because of this.

You need to tighten the toilet handle nut.
The nut should fit snugly around an adjustable wrench or pliers when twisted clockwise. If you overtighten it, the porcelain tank may crack.

You can test the toilet by depressing the handle.

Turn back on the water supply.
Turn the shut-off valve counterclockwise to open it. The tank will be refilled.

Replace a toilet handle
Prepare the hardware needed for your toilet lever replacement. Hardware stores usually sell universal toilet handles, but you may need a specific type. Check your existing brand, model, and make to determine what type of flush handle replacement will fit.
Turn off the water, remove the tank lid and empty it. The following is a summary of the items 1-4 above.
Unhook the chain clip that is attached to the lever inside the tank. The chain is attached to the inside portion of your toilet handle.
It's time to remove the mounting nut. In the first walkthrough up top, you would have tightened this nut. Remove the nut using a wrench or pliers (reverse clockwise).
Take out the old handle. The nut and chain holding it in place can be removed, and it can then be pulled out by hand. If it's too far, you might need to angle it a bit to get it out.
Remove the mounting nut on the new handle nut, but do not lose it. Plastic or metal nuts are available.
Match the position of the new lever with the old one in the tank. In the right position, the handle should be flush with the tank's side.
Mount the new mounting nut on the handle from inside the tank.
A person tests the replacement toilet lever.

Test it again by turning the water back on. Flushing should be easy, without rattling.
