Many automotive service technicians perform a specific automotive job. Typical automotive service facilities can change the oil, check tires, and rotate wheels. It is usually a part of the basic services offered by the facility. But you might need to ask them ahead of time about working on more extensive work such as extended or heavy duty vehicles, specialty vehicles, or custom cars. This article will discuss the typical tasks performed by auto technicians.
In order to keep your vehicle running in top condition, it must be maintained mechanically. A good mechanic should also be able to replace parts that show wear or damage. The mechanics who perform regular maintenance inspections should be knowledgeable about engine and transmission fluid, spark plugs, brakes, tires, clutches, gaskets, hoses, fluids and the entire system as a whole. If the mechanic doesn't know how to properly inspect your car, he is not qualified to repair any problems that arise.
The maintenance work for automotive vehicles is divided into two categories. There is the mechanical maintenance and the non-mechanical maintenance. All of the work can be performed through either type but it is rare that any work is completed solely using mechanical methods.
One area that is often overlooked in auto body repair is paintwork. Even with a new paint job your vehicle will normally need some touch up paint to hide blemishes or repair flaws. The auto body industry spends millions of dollars each year repairing paint that shows signs of aging or damage. A well trained technician can paint any portion of the car for you - even the smallest panels.
Brakes, rotors, alignment and other components are often inspected during routine maintenance. If these parts are not functioning correctly they can be replaced or repaired. Other areas of the vehicle that may require maintenance include airbags, foot controls, fuel management and emissions control devices. These checks and replacements occur on a routine basis and are not covered by any insurance.
Automotive When a body shop expert arrives at your home or place of business to repair or replace parts they are going to first start by doing a physical examination of the automobile. From this point on they will take pictures of all areas of the vehicle and perform a number of diagnostic tests. Then they will make a complete inventory of all parts and begin replacing parts that show wear or have rust. Sometimes the car will just need some paint jobs while other tasks may include replacing all of the engine parts. Some repair tasks may also require that the vehicle be temporarily shut off while the parts are being repaired.
You can expect your technician to ask you a number of questions about the type of vehicle you own as well as any other details about the repairs. If you have any questions about the repairs being performed then be sure to ask those questions before the technician leaves with your cash payment. Remember, the technician has never owned or repaired your vehicle so it is possible they may not know how to do certain tasks. If you aren't completely satisfied with the workmanship and quality of parts the shop offers you should get an appraisal of the repairs.
Brake pads, calipers and rotors are typically replaced by a service technician once per year, depending on the age of your car and the amount of miles driven. If you want to avoid having to bring in a professional to service your vehicle you can schedule the work to be carried out at your home or office. In most cases, brake pads and calipers need to be checked approximately every thousand miles. Your car's owner's manual will specify when your vehicle's brake maintenance should be scheduled.
