Auschwitz is one of the first Nazi German concentration camps to be built in Poland. It was also the largest of the camps run by Nazis. The camp was created due to the overcrowded prisons housing Polish police officers. Around 10,000 Poles were forced to flee the surrounding villages due to the construction. Auschwitz was not initially designed to be a significant Nazi terror camp, however it quickly became the central point for the extermination of Jews. The camp was a government-controlled institution, financed by the country's budget. Auschwitz was composed of three parts in 1944. Auschwitz I included 16,000 prisoners. Auschwitz II- Birkenau wherein were the largest gas chambers and held 90,000 prisoners. Then there was Auschwitz IIIwhich was Monowitz, which contained 10,000 prisoners. Many smaller sub-camps housed over 20000 prisoners and served as a labor forces for the main compound.



In late 1944, the Germans begin to erase evidence of their crimes, burning files blasting gas chambers burning depots, destruction of property left by victims. Oswiecim was visited by troops of the Soviet Red Army in January 1945. Then, Germans organized the Death March for 56,000 prisoners in an effort to take them to concentration camps in the middle of the Third Reich. Nearly 10,000 were killed on the route. At the end January the camp was finally liberated. Only 7,500 of its sick and exhausted inmates remain.
